Orh Nee POP SuuKee Coffee has been pretty much on a roll recently — whilst starting off as a dining establishment much to the likes of Toast Box when they had first started operations at one-north, these folks had found themselves being pretty much at the forefront of the local F&B scene ever since they had launched their Orh Nee Toast; while they aren’t exactly the first to have launched such an item in the island, this is the very first time that such an item has found its way to a menu of a dining establishment here after quite a number of years when the now-defunct Kopi Alley 咖啡巷 offered it as a limited time-only special on their menu. While their one-north location is one that isn’t particularly easy to hit due to the limited operating hours, these folks had expanded their operations to include a pop-up location in Scotts Square (to be moved to another location within the same mall as a long-term tenant) as well as a smaller location within Millenia Walk. Their location at Millenia Walk replaces the now-defunct Gong Cha outlet there; one can find them situated in the middle of the aisle beneath the escalator around where Six Hands and the outlet of Starbucks there are located. Operating more like a takeaway kiosk, the Millenia Walk location does have limited dine-in seating that comprises of simple wooden chairs and tables catered to mostly groups of two (2) to four (4) pax — time limit for dine-in is also limited to 45 minutes as well to allow a faster turnover of tables and to discourage patrons from hogging on to the limited seating within the outlet. Considering how the Millenia Walk outlet is sized significantly smaller than that of their one-north location, the menu at their Millenia Walk location is limited to their most popular product line-up; the variety of Hainanese-style breakfast toasts that they have to offer. Beverages offered at Millenia Walk will include Hainanese-style Kopi & Teh.
We like how the folks at SuuKee Coffee had never beeb resting on their laurels despite their success with the Orh Nee Toast — so much that they have found yet another purple-hued element to bring into their Hainanese-style breakfast toast offerings. Exclusive to their outlet at Millenia Walk would be the line-up that features Purple Sweet Potato — SuuKee Coffee doesn’t only offer the Purple Sweet Potato toast featuring purple sweet potato as-is, but they are also offering two (2) other variants of toast featuring the same element; the Orh Nee POP, and the Purple Sweet Potato + Butter. As with how it is the norm for such items to be served even elsewhere, patrons can opt for the toast to come ala-carte, or go with a set which sees the addition of a standard-sized hot drink of the patron’s choice and also two (2) soft boiled eggs. We went for the Orh Nee POP, which came with the Yam Paste spread that SuuKee Coffee is now known for alongside the Purple Sweet Potato spread — there is also an option to add-on Butter for the Orh Nee POP, though this was an option that we skipped out on. SuuKee Coffee’s version of the Yam Paste spread is our favourite of all Yam Paste / Taro-infused Hainanese breakfast toasts that we had tried thus far — not only is their Yam Paste spread being of a good balance of earthiness of yam and fragrance of coconut cream, we also liked that it isn’t too sweet. We also love how they are generous with the Yam Paste spread, and that the consistency of the Yam Paste spread is also always sufficiently creamy, slightly runny and mostly smooth with just some grainy bits that comes from the fibres of the root vegetable. The addition of a Purple Sweet Potato spread adds on just a slight touch of sweetness that compliments the Yam Paste spread; all with the spread coming with a consistency less runny and more “mash”-like that also went well with the consistency of the Yam Paste spread. While significant efforts had been placed in the spreads at SuuKee Coffee, these folks had not neglected about the toast either; there is this light crispness in the toast that we found to be pretty delightful — a texture that not all commercially-run joints serving Hainanese-style breakfast toasts can achieve.
The Orh Nee Chicken Floss is something that SuuKee Coffee had been carrying in its menu for a while at its one-north location that was introduced subsequent to their launch of the Orh Nee Toast — whilst being an item that one may be able to find something similar in other countries, this combination of elements is still rather rare to find in Singapore. This featured the very same toast and the Yam Paste spread that can be found in their Orh Nee Toast; these also came with our order of the Orh Nee POP, but it is the pork floss that adds a contrast of umami notes that adds on further to their already stellar Orh Nee Toast which we felt was a must-try. Having gone for their Signature White Kopi a number of times prior at their one-north location, we thought it would be good to go for their Kopi this time round. Ordering the hot version at its regular level of sweetness whilst opting for “Gao” (i.e. thick), this does come with a surprising depth when it came to the kick of caffeine despite the lighter shade of brown that it came in. Opting for “Gao” also probably made the Kopi feel less sweet; something which we found to be more well-balanced since we enjoyed the more intense kick of caffeine here. SuuKee Coffee has most certainly come a long way from its day at one-north; its success seems to have come from the innovation and creativity that they have brought to the local F&B scene, whilst they had also been consistently refining their offerings to ensure that the patrons do get the very best of what they have conceptualised. The Orh Nee Toast is a reflection of SuuKee Coffee’s journey in the local F&B scene; something which has been improved on over time and subsequently spawned off the line-up of purple sweet potato toasts as well. At this note, we would like to congratulate the folks behind SuuKee Coffee on the opening of their Millenia Walk outlet, and wish them all the best in what is to come — looking forward to what else these folks may bring to the local F&B scene, and also the opening of their long-term space at Scotts Square some time soon!
