Assorted Nigri Sushi (6 pcs) — Amaebi Sushi, Salmon Sushi Have heard about Shogun Sushi on social media and had wanted to drop by to try their stuff out for a while, though them being located at Sims Urban Oasis and being a takeaway-only space just felt a little out of the way to make a purposeful visit — little did we expect that we found ourselves dropping by Shogun Sushi right after our visit to Alto Cafe’s newest outpost which is located within the same condominium, though from a different entrance. For those who are unaware, Shogun Sushi is a pretty recent entrant to the local F&B scene — being just an establishment that caters to takeaways at this current juncture, they do offer quite a variety of items on their menu; think items ranging from sides such as Japanese Salad with Sesame Dressing and Mentai Karaage Chicken, to sushi such as Aburi Salmon Sushi and Mentai Tamago Sushi, as well as a small Donburi section that includes the likes of the Tekka Don and Chirashi Don. Patrons can either grab the items that they wish to purchase from the display chillers, or make their order via scanning a QR code handed out by the counter staff should the item they wish to purchase is unavailable, and they may be able to prepare a new portion upon order.
Visiting Shogun Sushi past lunch hour, we note that there was a limited selection of items available in the display chiller. Looking to just have a light bite, we found ourselves eventually settling for the Assorted Nigri Sushi (6 pcs) — the box that we picked features 3 pcs of their Amaebi Sushi, and 3 pcs of their Salmon Sushi. Each box is also thoughtfully packed with a packet of wasabi, as well as a packet of soy sauce as well. On first look, the Assorted Nigri Sushi did not seem too different from the sushi often available at grab-and-go sections of a supermarket. Picking the sushi up with the chopsticks however proves the difference — one would be able to notice how easy it is to pick the sushi up using the chopsticks without the rice disintegrating into multiple parts; it also stays pretty much intact when one dips the sushi into the soy sauce and wasabi as well. The rice here is especially well-made; we liked how the rice is flavourful on its own — carried a noticeable note of sweetness, but most importantly the rice is also well-packed and firmly shaped so there isn’t any loose ends that crumbles off from the entire sushi as one picks them up. For both the Amaebi and the Salmon Sushi, the seafood featured are of good quality and fresh — was pretty delightful to have, and is certainly a slightly more premium offering than the ones often found in supermarkets; pretty commendable.
It was a shame that we have had a well-sized meal before heading to Shogun Sushi — we reckoned that if their sushi was this delicious, they would have served up some pretty decent don that features raw items such as the Chirashi Don and the Aburi Salmon Mentai Don; there is just something about their offerings that make them a bit more artisanal than the convenient grab-and-go spots that we are used to buying from (or even certain fast casual sushi chains serving sushi on conveyor belts, for that matter). No doubt Sims Urban Oasis may be a little bit of a travel for some, but it probably wouldn’t be wrong to say that the residents of this condominium are pretty blessed to have Shogun Sushi within their compounds — a spot we would probably find ourselves splurging on some satisfying takeaway sushi pretty regularly if we reside around this area!
