French cuisine here used to be upper-class fine dining, but thankfully more affordable options are available with popular chains Saybons and Poulet, or more intimate cafes like Antoinette and Mad About Sucre. Pardon My French, an inconspicuous diner at Icon Village, is kind of croque-monsieured between the two classes (cuz it's a sandwich geddit geddit), offering almost classic French dishes in a tiny casual brasserie.

The golden fried mantou-s are a giveaway that this bouillabaisse has been localised slightly. The traditional bouillabaisse is eaten with toasted bread, but maybe the French should try this instead. The buns were big and marshmallowy, I don't know how they made it so crisp without a tinge of oil anywhere. I wish I had a bowl of chilli crab sauce to dip into, but the soupy fish stew sufficed.

Right in the middle of the stew are two generous pieces of dory. Not sure if I'm being picky here but the frozen-packed “freshness” was lingering… The peppery tomato-base soup was still full of umami though, thanks to the clams, prawns, mussels and calamari in the mix.

I’ll recommend having the homemade Bailey’s ice cream if you drop in for a meal, they were not stingy on the alcohol for sure. I had it with the warm poached pear in red wine sauce and while I don’t think it’s the perfect pairing, the Bailey’s surprisingly brings out the mild fruity body of the red wine.
Poulet Roti with pasta tossed in caramelised onions sauce ($12.90 with a dessert) at this cafe-bistro that has opened up quietly in Tanjong Pagar. Affordable French food with quality, done by two At-Sunrice graduates. MUST have their homemade Baileys ice cream. Review on herpenandfork.blogspot.sg.

Soaked in red wine, the pear compote was served warmed with homemade Bailey's ice cream, adding on to its alcohol undertone. I have tried fruit compote served with vanilla ice cream which are often too sweet and dense, but this is light and tastes clean. The only issue I have is with the ice cream, that melted so fast on the warm pear that 2 tiny bites were all I managed to get.
