Honestly, was a bit disappointed. The scallops didn’t taste fresh. And there wasn’t enough sauce to flavour the rice (unless you count soy sauce)
Lola’s Cafe has to be our favourite 🫶🏻 neighbourhood cafe, and they’ve recently opened their third and newest outlet in Tampines Mall! Featuring a scandinavian minimalist interior spanning TWO storeys, neutral earthy tones, and floor to ceiling windows, us easties were SO excited for their opening! 🙌🏻
Over in the East, the folks at Lola’s created a slightly different rendition of this dish from their Kovan outlet: they switched out the bacon and pork sausage for a chicken kielbasa one, and added an avocado salsa spread on their sourdough. These, combined with the creamy scrambled eggs and tater tots made for a perfect breakfast! 🤩
The first dish is an outlet-exclusive stew of minced lamb, bell pepper, tomato sauce, perfectly poached eggs, and feta cheese. The shakshuka was sedap and heavy on the spices, but we do wish it were thicker! The toasty buttery sourdough was a good pairing. Be prepared though, as the lamb has some gaminess.
Also only available at this outlet, the battered hake fish fillet was substantial but maybe slightly overcooked. We did wish that the tater tots came with some sauce on the side, but the fennel cabbage slaw was tarte and refreshing!
The waffles were superbly done. They were chewy in the centre and crispy brown on the outside! However, the cereal milk ice cream was kind of flavourless for us.
Crisp and fragrant, wish they were more heavy handed on the truffle oil and parm!
Your Lolas experience isn’t complete without their wings
For drinks, we got their 𝗬𝘂𝘇𝘂 𝗠𝗮𝘁𝗰𝗵𝗮 ($𝟳), 𝗜𝗰𝗲𝗱 𝗠𝗼𝗺𝗼 𝗢𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗻𝗴 𝗠𝗶𝗹𝗸 𝗙𝗼𝗮𝗺 ($𝟲.𝟱𝟬), and 𝗜𝗰𝗲𝗱 𝗣𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗳𝗿𝘂𝗶𝘁 𝗘𝗮𝗿𝗹 𝗚𝗿𝗲𝘆 ($𝟲.𝟱𝟬). 🍹🍸🍵
We were first drawn to Hey Slow Joe because of their striking and bubbly laid-back electric blue logo. Something about it was just so pleasing to look at, and so they were on our to-visit the list for the longest! The place is small and cozy, with about 8 indoor seats, and 2 camping chairs outside. An industrial themed interior with low cove lights and a sleek faema e71 blending seamlessly into the cool tones. A glass display of their bites had the daily specials penned on the outside. The variety of drinks and bites here were aplenty and we found it hard to choose, so we went with what was most familiar
Rich, roasty and milky with the perfect amount of sweetness. A hojicha done right and delivered a caffeine boost through the afternoon.
A loaf that wraps you like a warm hug, this was moist and soft, with scattered walnuts and chunks of banana. Not too sweet, always our go to for afternoon tea, and we’d most probably get it again
