Tze Char

We recently discovered a good zi char restaurant Jin Jue Seafood in the Jalan Besar area! Here’s what we had:

~Red Snapper Signature Steamboat ($38)
~Shrimp Paste Chicken ($12)
~Salted Egg Pork Ribs ($18)
~Golden Crispy Tofu ($12)
~Stir Fried Kailan with Dried Scallops ($15)

The main highlight was the Red Snapper Signature Steamboat! The refillable broth was so rich and flavourful, and the fresh red snapper slices are served separately, so you can cook it as and when you want to eat it, and at your preferred doneness too! Other dishes we liked were the Shrimp Paste Chicken (crispy & juicy!), Salted Egg Pork Ribs (tender pork ribs coated in addictive salted egg yolk sauce!) and Stir Fried Kailan with Dried Scallops (first time having kailan cooked this way, and we found it interesting & yummy!).

Overall, I’d definitely recommend a visit to Jin Jue Seafood with your family or friends for a good zi char meal!

Revisited Lam’s Garden for dinner with my friend recently, and I’m happy to report that the standard of their food remains up to par as the first time I had it! From the eye-catching ‘Twin Towers’ Seafood Crispy Noodle that tastes as good as it looks, the super shiok Curry Fish Head with a nicely balanced gravy, to the comforting Sweet Clam in Superior Broth and finally the flavourful Four Types Vegetables w/ Sambal - each dish was spot on in terms of taste! We had a chat with the founder Chef Lam too, and you can really see how passionate he is about his craft, which you can totally taste in the dishes he cooks! Highly recommended to visit for some delicious tze char!

I shared about Pratunam at Upper Boon Keng awhile back, which sold Thai-style street food (which unfortunately is now defunct). But that same boss has recently started a new food venture selling tze char at Ubi this time!

They were pretty busy when we visited on a weekday for dinner, and we had to wait awhile before our food was served to us. But at least the dishes we had were pretty good overall:

~Portuguese Style Stringray ($12/18)
~BBQ Sotong ($10/14)
~Oyster Egg ($8)
~Seafood White Bee Hoon ($6/10)
~Prawn Paste Chicken Fried Rice ($6)
~Sambal Kang Kong ($7)

The highlights for me from this list are the Portuguese Style Stingray (the sauce is so tasty and appetising, it tasted somewhat like asam, but a lot more fragrant with the spices used), Oyster Egg (love how fluffy and crispy the egg was, and the oysters were fresh and plump too!) and Seafood White Bee Hoon (flavourful broth, and the bee hoon which had soaked up all the essence was enjoyable to have along with the other ingredients like seafood and egg!).

Overall, I won’t go as far to say that this place is worth travelling all the way down for, but if you’re nearby or in the area then I’d recommend this place for a visit for some above average tze char!

Both versions of their Sri Lankan crabs were delicious! They were really fresh and meaty as well! But if I had to choose a favourite, it would probably be the Black Pepper Crab, because in terms of flavour it had a slight edge over the Chili Crab. Other favourites from this selection are the creamy Pork Ribs w/ Chef’s Special Sauce and the Mee Goreng, which had a good spicy kick!

Hot Spot Cafe Restaurant has been on my radar ever since I saw posts on social media highly recommending their Tom Yum Fish Soup. I finally got to try their popular specialty and other zichar dishes on their menu via delivery recently. Here’s what I ordered:

~Curry Fish Head
~Double Fish Tom Yum Soup w/ Ou Mifen
~Deep Fried Pork Belly w/ Garlic
~Stir-Fried French Bean w/ Shrimp

The reviews were spot on in regard to their Tom Yum Fish Soup. The Tom Yum broth was super shiok; so robust and flavourful! As for the fish, I personally preferred the fried fish and would order just the fried fish next time. We loved the Curry Fish Head too! The curry was really rich and appetising, and went well with rice. The Deep Fried Pork Belly w/ Garlic deserves a special mention too – so crispy and fragrant!

The Shimmering Sand Crab Delight is without a doubt the standout dish! The sauce is super rich and creamy (goes damn well with the mantou!) while the crab meat is sweet and succulent! Other favourites are the Signature Drunken Prawn (love the herbalicious broth!) and Salted Egg Nan Ru Pork (very addictive!). As for the bubble tea, I like the refreshing Winter Peach Green Tea!

George Town Tze Char & Craft Beer is a brand new alfresco restaurant at 81 Boat Quay specialising in traditional Penang favourites and delectable seafood cooked by an award-winning chef.

One of my favourite dishes is the super appetising Thai Curry Fish Head that’s meticulously prepared with Thai herbs and spices including lemongrass, tamarind, lime leaves, curry leaves and bird’s eye chillies. This tangy, comforting dish will leave you yearning for more!

Another must order dish is their Signature San Lou Beehoon, which was crispy on the outside and moist on the inside. Pair it with sambal belacan chilli for the best taste experience!

Had a good hearty dinner with my foodie friends recently at San Low Restaurant, a relatively new Tze Char stall located at Geylang Lorong 7.

The standout dish for me personally was the White Pepper Crab, which was packed full of umami flavour, and not too overpowering at the same time. They use only live crabs here, which explained why the crab meat tasted so fresh and sweet! Highly recommended!
