Local Food

Always quite crowded around here and rather difficult to find seats. But prices are very affordable for an air conditioned space and food is rather recent. Here I have Steamed kaya butter bun ($2.40), also ordered some kopi / teh / barley which were around $1.40-$1.80.

It is unlikely to stay and chat for a long time once you finish your food though, due to the high turnover of tables. Service is so-so as the staff are fast-paced and place is quite busy but staff is still helpful. Overall nice space to chill for a bit after a walk at Bukit Timah Nature Reserve.

Curry pork with rice ($4.80 lunch promotion) from Zi Char store, Ching Seafood.

Freshly stir fried Chinese-style curry pork filled with pork slices, onions and tomatoes. Fragrant and flavorful, curry tastes good with wokhay and goes with rice well! Didn’t feel too oily or feel like it has coconut milk, hence the gravy had a good consistency, not too thin nor too thick. Would have like a bit more browning / stir fry on the pork itself. Nevertheless, would recommend this!

Quarter fried chicken lunch set ($9.90) served with choice of drink and appetizers.

Crispy and flavorful Korean fried chicken. Order the half-half flavor to taste both the spicy and soy fried chicken. My preference would have been soy, but too much of it may become unappetizing, hence a mix of flavors was satisfying for the palate. As my spice tolerance is average, I do find the sauce a little spicy but bearable. The fried chicken was juicy, tender, well coated, and served hot. Do complement it with the side dishes - coleslaw, radish, and kimchi that’s refreshing and packed with flavor!

Chicken curry weekday lunch set ($9.90) with choice of rice or bread, drink, side, and daily soup.

Very huge portion and filling meal. Chicken and potato in the curry seemed fresh and were very soft, and the taste of the curry was slightly above average in my opinion - more savory than sweet, mildly spicy, rich and earthy.

The bread loaf did not taste fragrant / compliment well, hence I recommend rice instead. The rest of the meal, ngo hiang, soup and grass jelly drink were nice, but nothing to shout about.

Service is ok, would have preferred dishes to be served in actual bowls and plates rather than disposable boxes.

Tip: curry sauce is free. You can order other dishes and ask for some curry sauce on the side.

Ordered the Nasi Lemak set with Pandan Chicken ($5.50), and with Chicken Wing ($5.50).

The rice was soft and fluffy, well-infused with coconut milk. Sambal gave a good spicy kick to the dish, wouldn’t say it’s the best I had but it was good. The meat for both sets were however very dry. Perhaps other choices with gravy would have been better. Anchovies and peanuts were crispy too, but tcould do better without flaky anchovies. Overall I enjoyed my meal and it’s worth a try for the rice!
