Was so excited to order this and try it when it finally came with the wonderful plating. Unfortunately, the chicken wasn’t fully cooked on the first serve, with the insides slightly pink and cold despite the exterior seemingly warm. While unsure of the reason why this happened, after flagging out and getting a new side of chicken, I guess my appetite was inevitably ruined even with the rectification. That being said, the rice was light and delicate and it was really a Lemak dish defined by coconut. The sambal on the side was rich and sweet as well.

My go to spot when I’m craving Mee Siam, though my fond memories of it from a few years ago seem more delicious than it was when I had it recently again. This bus bowl with a generous amount of tau pok and tangy, spicy, gravy was still delightful, but it didn’t have the kick it had like a few years back. The prawns could have fared better fresh, and the flavour isn’t as rich anymore.

Stumbled along this pretty and quaint Peranakan designed cafe that sold local delights - from laksa to tiny kuehs. Went for the curry chicken rice which was a sizeable portion, with one huge chicken drumstick, potatoes, and a side of Nyonya chap Chye. The curry was rich in lemak - that aroma and flavour of coconut milk really came through. The gravy was also on the sweeter side, and I wished it had a much spicier kick. And that was easily solved after I requested for a side of sambal and added it to the gravy, which really elevated the experience and the spice of the entire curry. A nice homely meal!

Stumbled upon this cafe at Fook Hai building as I was around Hong Lim market, and it had a decent crowd for an off peak afternoon. Smelled the aroma of the curry and got hungry, and while it isn’t the most wallet friendly, it was one of the more delicious chicken curries I’ve had. The sauce had its balance all right - the consistency, the spice, the coconut milkiness. Chicken was wildly tender, and the best part was the rosemary and garlic focaccia chunks that blended perfectly with the rich curry sauce. They serve other local cuisines as well like Mee Siam and Mee rebus, which all look delicious from their menu. But this is one place I’d bring a friend, both for their excellent coffee and food offerings.

Absolutely love tater tots and here, the tater tots were hot and crispy! The flavour of the uni Mayo was good, but would’ve definitely appreciated if there were more sauce to be shared amongst all the tots. The half portion was delightful because it was perfect for trying and sharing, without having too huge a portion.

Huge piece of fried chicken placed on top of a thick French toast served with maple syrup on the side. The chicken was decent, well-battered and very fried but I thought that the batter lacked a distinct flavour. The French toast also fell short because it was dry and not fluffy. It does look like a sinful dish to get but I’m sceptical that it lives up to how good it looks.

A huge portion of Rosé udon, loved the creamy gochujang flavour that kicked a nice spice, and the very bouncy yet chewy texture of the udon. The karage was just decent - a tad bit dry and I couldn’t really make up the flavours of the batter. I still thought it was quite an interesting and filling plate, so I’d recommend sharing!

Rwanda Nova beans with hints of redcurrants, black plums, and roselle. Very smooth texture and delightful flavour to the coffee.

Thick, fried pork belly embraced in two toasty, crusty buns. All was good, but what sealed the deal was the combination of daikon and zucchini pickles and rosemary plum sauce, which gave a very pleasant, appetising punch to the sandwich. It’s a huge portion for one, and I’d highly recommend sharing - especially when you can get their bakes on the shelf (the chocolate ganache cake was way too good).

One of my favorite new found cafes got to be Main Street Commissary, for their affordable brunch food and well-executed drinks. Had their smoked salmon Eggs Benedict that hit all the right spots at a great price, and a hot latte which was decently smooth and not too acidic. The cafe has a cozy ambience and free flow water, which makes it a nice place to chill and hang out with friends.

Finally visited the second branch of Lola’s cafe at Holland Village, with its quaint two-storey unit nestled at the corner of Lorong Mambong. The minimalistic vibes with its simple, aesthetic decor gives the cafe a warm, cosy ambience for an afternoon coffee or fun brunch with friends. Went for the spicy crab rigatoni that was choke full of blue swimmer crab and lathered with a delicate balance of tomato, white wine and cream sauce. The flavours went well together, and the texture of the rigatoni soaked up the sauce perfectly. Not forgetting that tinge of parmesan cheesiness which gave that added goodness to it. Highly recommend!

Chicken wings fried to a nice crispy texture. The batter was slightly sweet yet spiced at the same time, which was quite delightful on the palate.
