That said, the ๐—–๐—ฟ๐—ผ๐—ถ๐˜€๐˜€๐—ฎ๐—ป๐˜ ($3.50) wasn't to my exacting standards when it came to the iconic classic. While there was ample butteriness and a decent amount of flake, the dough was too chewy. However, I was told they're looking into increasing the number of folds โ€” possibly yielding flakier batches in the future.

French pastries galore at the bakery section of this new French bistro. You're in for a world of Pain with viennoiseries, baguettes, and all the carbs you'd need to satiate your lust for dough.

There are still some kinks since they're in their soft launch phase but the treats were decently enjoyable for the most part. For example, the ๐—ค๐˜‚๐—ถ๐—ฐ๐—ต๐—ฒ ๐—Ÿ๐—ผ๐—ฟ๐—ฟ๐—ฎ๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ฒ ($7.50) was a solid rendition that provided rich creamy bites, peppered with bacon and caramelized onions.

There are days when you just crave for the simple things in life. @bakerybrera's ๐—ฝ๐—น๐—ฎ๐—ถ๐—ป ๐—ฐ๐—ฟ๐—ผ๐—ถ๐˜€๐˜€๐—ฎ๐—ป๐˜ ($3.50) is a nice companion for those lazy mornings snuggled in bed with a good book.
-
Maybe not crazy crispy or buttery but it's a charmingly safe choice that wasn't over-indulgent when you just want simplicity. Delightful treat with a gentle buttery fragrance and light flaky crust. Slightly doughy but fluffy enough to remind you of the comfy bed covers you're lying on.

Is red velvet really a flavour? Regardless, you gotta admit cream cheese and chocolate is a killer combo.
-
@konditorisg does pretty solid croissants โ€” buttery with flake and fluff. With added cream cheese sweet-richness and accents of chocolate, this ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐—ฑ ๐˜ƒ๐—ฒ๐—น๐˜ƒ๐—ฒ๐˜ ๐—ฐ๐—ฟ๐—ผ๐—ถ๐˜€๐˜€๐—ฎ๐—ป๐˜ is oh-so-sinful but totally worth the calories.
-
The allure of this scarlet hued pastry will test the will of even the most tenacious dieter. In the end they will helplessly devour it. Croissant is inevitable. ๐Ÿฅ๐Ÿฅ๐Ÿฅ

๐—ฆ๐—ฎ๐—ธ ๐—ž๐—ฒ๐—ถ ๐— ๐—ฎ (or โ€œ่จๅ…ถ้ฉฌ") is a snack that I'd enjoyed in my childhood. Sadly, Pan Ji is now Singapore's last surviving stall making it fresh. Despite being located amongst other hawker stalls plastered with Michelin accolades, it's still my favourite at Chinatown Complex.
-
It might be just chunky batter melded together with sugar syrup, but this snack was magically loaded with a wealth of addictively fragrant egginess and malty caramelisation.
-
Once you've savoured that lightly airy crunch that's nicely punctuated with a sticky chewiness from the sugar, you'd find yourself popping in piece after piece. The supermarket variant really doesn't compare.
-
Their operating hours have been shortening year after year. If you haven't, it's worth a trip down before handmade Sak Kei Ma is rendered extinct by the proverbial asteroid that is modernisation.

There's the classic kaya toast we love, and there's this sourdough ๐—ธ๐—ฎ๐˜†๐—ฎ ๐˜๐—ผ๐—ฎ๐˜€๐˜ ($7) beaut from @microbakerykitchen. It was a home run with that thick, fluffy and lightly chewy sourdough toast blanketed by that luscious layer of kaya. ๐Ÿž๐Ÿฅฅ
-
The intoxicating fragrance of pandan and coconut was the star but the supporting cast of sourdough twang, rich butter and sea salt bestowed some show-stopping nuances. That said, there was one part of my toast which was quite unevenly salted. But other than that, this was a tasteful modern cafe take on kaya toast.

Cloudstreet's immaculate experimentation is shown here in a great starter that no one would loaf โ€” quite the proof. (Yes I'm doing bread puns)

This ๐˜€๐˜๐—ผ๐˜‚๐˜ ๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ฑ ๐—น๐—ถ๐—ฐ๐—ผ๐—ฟ๐—ถ๐—ฐ๐—ฒ ๐—ฏ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐—ฎ๐—ฑ was part of my set lunch ($78++), and perhaps the highlight. The texture was beguiling โ€” fluffy and dense whilst carrying a bit of moistness at the same time.
-
The truly enchanting part was in its perfect storm of flavours. It carried dainty sweet notes from that gorgeous molass glaze, which was complemented by deeper savoury notes of the licorice and stout, adding a magical breadth to its profile. Topped off with the heavenly butter, I couldn't help but wolf this down.

Outside, the pastry not only looks gorgeous but also has just the right amount of flakiness, butteriness and sweetness.
-
When split open, mouth-watering amounts of custard gush out. The filling is not overly sweet, whilst still packing a gratifyingly milky fragrance.
Paired together, the result is a heavenly pastry that is never cloying.

This grilled cheese sandwich with brie, cheddar and mozzarella was scrumptuously rich. For heathens that do not appreciate the glorious cheese overload, it is served with an addictively zesty tomato dip that can cut through the heartiness.

The woodfire baked bread on this breadboard ($10) were masterfully crafted, with a golden ratio of denseness and chewiness. The white sourdough in particular was heavenly when toasted, imbued with an irresistible char and a pleasurable crunch.
-
Not to forget the accompanying olive oil and Norwegian butter, both of which were supremely fragrant and the perfect foil to the bread.

Their sourdough is always on point. This toast ($6) is dense but still fluffy, whilst boasting a satisfying crunchiness on its toasted exterior.
-
The nut butter also delivers a pleasantly fragrant nuttiness -but not too jelak- and is not overly thick. It's great, but also makes me miss the classic from @woodlandssd!

This almond croissant ($4.80) is probably one of the best I've had in SG. That unbelievably flaky and buttery exterior concealed the dense and chewy innards. It was supremely nutty and had a playful dose of sweetness that was not remotely cloying.
-
I actually had it before, but this time it was the most on point it had tasted. I was thoroughly blessed with two of life's biggest enjoyments - great pastry and Murakami. (Tbh it was just a prop lol but the book is amazing nonetheless)
