On days you’re looking for a little adventure, make the drive to Cheras to visit Ebony & Ivory for their delicious rice bowls and more. The house specialty Minced Pork Scrambled Eggs Rice (RM13) always hits the spot, but if you’re here on a weekend, spend tummy space on specials — the Omelette with Pork Belly (RM20) features a perfectly swirled egg with glazed pork belly and toast. Coffee is superb too. Go for the Filter (from RM18) brewed with beans from Artisan Roastery, or keep it simple with a creamy Flat White (RM11). The housemade cakes selection change from time to time but if you see the Butter Loaf (RM6), grab a slice!

Going six years strong now, VCR leads KL’s cafe scene deservingly — the food is tasty and coffee is consistently good. The Burpple community is obsessed with the brunch grub, especially the French Toast (RM19) with espresso ice cream, raspberry compote and mocha sauce, as well as the no-fail Big Breakfast (RM36). VCR also roasts their own coffee beans, so expect quality cuppas like their deliciously smooth Flat White (RM12) to go with your meal, or if you’re looking for a caffeine-free option, Burppler Calie Tang’s recommends the Valrhona Chocolate (RM14).

Open seven days a week, this forever-packed Plaza Batai spot is perfect for when you and the colleagues are out for a nice treat-yourself lunch. Must-orders include the I Wanna Be Kaya (RM20) featuring fluffy French toast and caramel kaya sauce and The Impasta! (RM26), aglio olio pasta with chicken char siew slices. Yellow Brick Road is also home to the winning barista at 2019's Malaysian Brewer’s Cup, so order a Filter Brew (from RM15) to get your fix from the champ.

Tucked in Bandar Sri Damansara, this two-storey cafe sports plenty of space for breakfast with the family, as well as quiet corners for those looking to get some work done. On food, expect hearty comfort eats like pastas, sandwiches and a not-to-be-missed signature Beam Nasi Lemak (RM16.50). Served with curry chicken and sweet, spicy sambal, it's a true blue Malaysian breakfast — best washed down with the fragrant Cold Brew (RM10).

It's the weekend; you're up early and famished — head on over to Ra.Ft for a meal to kickstart your day. The new outlet in Arcoris Plaza is gorgeous with floor-to-ceiling glass windows, plus it’s spacious enough for big family get-togethers. Expect Italian brunch fare, like French Croissant with Parma Ham and Buffalo Mozzarella (RM27) and a classic Stuffed Caprese (stuffed chicken breast with cheese, pesto and tomatoes, RM32). If you’re feeling exceptionally hungry, order My Breakfast (RM28.50), which allows you to pile it on by building your own plate. Finish the meal off with a dark and fruity Long Black (RM8) roasted and brewed in-house.

Chill vibes, well thought-out Mediterranean plates and delicious brews come together to make this entry a neighbourhood favourite in Ampang. If it’s your first time here, consider trying the best of both worlds with the Duet (RM14), which comes with a single Espresso and either a Piccolo Latte or a Flat White. On food, try the popular Gish (RM26) — delicious spiced lamb meatballs with beetroot hummus and Turkish bread. The community also has high praises for the Thai Embassy (RM20) starring deep-fried siakap. For a light bite, go with Burppler Sunita S’s recommendation for heavenly Ricotta Toast (RM14) with cherry jam.

The young team behind this cafe in sleepy SS17 keeps it real with their mission to feed the neighbourhood comfort fare and great coffee. It’s a small and cosy space, which is great for lingering with friends over a bottle of Cold Brew (RM13) and fresh bakes. The display counter showcases doughnuts, cakes and cinnamon rolls on rotation, and they're all done well. For something more substantial, you won't go wrong with the Toasted Sourdough (RM15) with eggs your way and mushroom ragout that will surely hit the spot.

Having served the community with amazing joe for over five years now, this TTDI cafe needs no introduction. Let the chart on the wall guide your decision on what to drink — coffee, tea or chocolate. Those who like their cuppa intense should get the Long Black (RM7.40). If not, take a chance on the Filter Coffee (RM12.70) — it never fails us. The kitchen doles out simple breakfast grub like the Eggs & Toast (RM13.80), Bagel Kosong (RM8.50) and Pancake Tampal (RM12.70).

This oldtime haunt hits the mark for no-frills fare, good house-roasted coffee and a swanky two-storey space. It opens early too, at 9am so bookmark this spot for early morning fuel-ups or weekends with the family. Favourites include the Mushroom Omelette (RM12), Chilli Crab Sandwich (RM12) and the Hot Bunny Crab Pasta (RM25) — all are simple but sufficiently tasty. There are two blends on offer for both black and white coffee, but the Driver featuring Indian and Guatemalan beans take the top spot for its bolder notes, which older folks in the area love. It's especially excellent had with milk, like in the super smooth and toasty Latte (RM8).

Still popular as ever among the Burpple community since it opened three years ago, it’s no surprise this swanky cafe in TTDI always makes it to our list. The space is a stunner – think gold accents, round marble tables and cosy oval booths that make for a perfect place to brunch with your girlfriends. Share the community-favourites Organic Eggs Benedict (RM38) with pulled beef cheeks and the decadent KL Churros (RM19). Coffee is taken very seriously here – there's an academy for coffee classes and an in-house roastery too.
