Hawker Goodies
Why do bai mi fen dishes always come in plates although there is so much soup? Haha. The broth was quite flavourful, with intense prawn flavour. Prawns were juicy! I loved that there was sufficient wok hei (but could be more). A decent dish for $6 I must say :)
Decent porridge at the famous Bedok 85! I had the cuttlefish porridge and it tasted slightly bland as compared to the pork one. But the cuttlefish pieces were generous and well cooked! The texture of the porridge is commendable as well: creamy and smooth. A comforting and healthy meal!
Long standing bak kut teh shop Joo Chiat Road. Similar to the Malaysian BKT, the soup is more intense in soy flavour rather than the Singapore peppery version. Ingredients are generous and pork is tender, tho nothing much to shout about. Their yam rice is delicious, however I prefer to pair the soup with a good old plain rice to bring out the herbal taste. Will come back if I’m looking for a comforting meal!
The meaty sauce went really well with the chewy noodles! Not oily at all, which is what I often find in typical zjm. Flavour was well balanced, not too overpowering and the salty and umami sauce coated the noodles really well. Just a simple comforting bowl of dry noodles!
Noodles were really special, they are handmade and really long! Despite being in the soup, they retained their chewiness and hardness which was ideal for me. The soup was average, simple but lacking the robust beef flavour. Beef slices were tender and chewy, probably treated with baking soda and not naturally braised till soft. Felt that the $5.80 price tag was on the high side but the portion was generous! Worth a try
Thosai is decently cooked: spongey with a tinge of sourness. Daal is a fail though, very watery, lacking the thickness and earthiness of the lentils.
Really really generous stall! Large portions with generous amounts of meat!! The wok hei is not very consistent but the gravy is flavourful and the bee hoon is fried well without being too soggy.
The duck slices were generous, but the soup lacked the intense herbal and robust flavour. I would say it is not worth the queue. Maybe the dry one tastes better.
I loved this porridge! Every spoonful was filled with ingredients which gave the porridge so much more flavour. Definitely not ‘bland and sick people food’! The texture of the porridge was also to my liking as the rice grains still had a bite. One more plus point is that they use brown rice! This gave the porridge a more earthy flavour. It’s a bit pricey ($5 with staff discount for a regular portion) but it’s a once-in-awhile lunch treat ;)
It’s supposedly a dish with ban mian, but I switched it to bee hoon because food coma ya? Haha. The soup base was ok-flavourful, prawns were fresh and the mince pork balls were chewy and bouncy. Nothing to shout about imo. Price was $4
Satay was too burnt and meat was too dry. Sauce was not too sweet, creamy with intense peanut flavour.
Super nice Aunty!! Awesome service aside, the stingray sauce was slightly too sweet but the meat was cooked well. The cincalok was amazing, tangy and shrimpy which paired really well with the stingray!
