What an underwhelming plate of sadness. What the monkeys nuts @theassemblyground Get your shit together! This was $18 if I am not wrong. Beef Ragout on Rosti. COME ON..... I basically paid $18 for frozen beef cubes, a slice or buttered bread, congealed "onsen egg" and a fried-to-a-crisp patty of potato strands that was smaller than my palm. While the sauce of the ragout was decent, it could hardly be considered good, the beef was hard, chewy, a lazily cooked dish I'd expect from a busy home cook. The egg congealed and gelatinous in nature. Don't even get me started on this sad excuse of Rosti. Cannot lah guys. Don't cheat people like that lei. Much disappointed by subpar food for ridiculous prices.
I.. I can't begin to comprehend the awe-inspiring Thai Milk Tea Bingsu from @ChickandKen here. It was marvelous. As I sat in the cool small space of the Korean fried chicken store, I savoured the snowy, icy bingsu lovingly draped in ribbons of condensed milk and Thai Milk Tea syrup. As it melted slowly, it turned into a refreshing slushie, taking me back to a quiet afternoon in Krabi. The red Ruby, cold and almost frozen in the bingsu was a welcomed chewy distraction from the noise around me. The cornflakes crunched as I faintly fit a fairly large spoonful of bingsu into my mouth. But then... It came. A cube of gelatin, hard and crumbly - like overdone agar agar. It's subtle Thai milk tea flavour overwhelmed by the revolting texture. Pui! Pui! I picked them out and continued eating my bingsu. Ah... Sweet, delicate, icy bliss once more.
Street food here is amazing, and the prata pancake is the first thing I go for. The salty, flaky prata is filled with fresh banana and topped with ooey #Nutella. It's damn oily but heavenly and makes you feel as guilty as hell. HAHAHAHA whatever! Tomorrow I'm getting the durian flavoured one. #streetfood
It's this amazing restaurant at the top of a hill overlooking the peaks and sea of Krabi. I'd have taken a picture of the view but I was too busy scratching my ga-bazillion mosquito bites and waiting for this platter of awesomeness. Titled the Andaman Platter for two, it had fresh, grilled seafood that had been expertly sliced, butterflied and deboned. The whole fish had NO bones, and was as soft as butter, each flake melting prettily in my mouth. The bits that we couldn't pick up using utensils my husband pinched and gobbled up straight from the plate. The mussels were fresh and went well with the Tom yum sauce they provided, as were the prawns that were easily stripped of their shell cause they were so perfectly cooked. All seafood was sweet, just the right consistency and a great way to end a day. Except for the crab though. A little tiny and sad, it wasn't the best. But with 90% of the plate rocking it, this was easily forgivable. We also requested for garlic butter sauce, cause we feel fresh seafood is best dipped in warm, salty butter. And they gave us ONION butter sauce! Hahaha it was super sweet. And weird. But all in all, good experience for 1580bht.
The sister cafe of Refuel Cafe, this one has more food options and is surrounded by heavy foliage and wandering chickens. It is also very quiet and peaceful - just how I like my cafes. The curry was a thing of beauty though. Two rather dry slices of bread accompanied this heady mix of minced onions, Indian spices and a burst of freshness from cumin and coriander seeds. Not heavy like some coconut cream heavy curries, but more fresh and bursting full of flavour, this was made exceptional by the large soft shell crab sitting like an island in a muddy sea. The crunchy and lightness of the crab is a welcome balance to the sloppy curry! Delicious!
I mean, seriously, I've never seen larger scoops of ice cream on a dessert.
The duck confit pasta was amazing! The duck meat was chewy and meaty and complemented the light hazelnut cream that coated each strand of pasta perfectly. A sprinkling of lemon zest brought a zing to the dish (way better than just a lame squeeze of lemon) and chopped hazelnuts lent texture to the dish. It was crazy how perfect the portion of cream to pasta was! Plus the cream kept all the hazelnuts coated to the pasta so I never had to use my spoon to pick up extra bits. Each strand gave me the perfect mix of pasta, duck, lemon and hazelnut. The dish was honestly light (yet flavourful) enough to fill me up but keep me from feeling stuffed and heavy. Where to find!! Plus the place: bright and airy. Just like Australia. Plus the chef's love and dedication for food was really inspiring. Really.
I hate milkshakes. I think they are too filling, thick, clumpy and overly sweet. Also not worth the price. But I think I found my dream milkshake. Sipping on this frothy, malty, milky concoction, I felt like I was the set of a Katy Perry music video, whipped cream shooting out of my bra and candy bits spraying in the wind. Called the Malt Mashed from @OliviaandCoSG it is stuffed with sticky, crunchy bits of Maltesers, rich vanilla ice cream, crushed honeycomb and chocolate. A hefty drink that is more dessert than refresher, it is rightly priced at $9.50. I say drink to share, then you can have TWO people shoot whipped cream out of their... - Amanda was cut off to perverse Instagram indecency.
New lunch place to check out! @CafeNidoSingapore is located at Hotel Yan, along Jalan Besar (food heaven). It's really nice and airy, quiet too. They serve up cafe favourites with an Asian twist. Eh, really nice lei. No lie. I've two favourites there already. The first is the Beef Rendang Dippers. The thick, chunky sauce reminds me of American chilli, but has a distinct Asian flavour with lemongrass and other rendang spices mixed together with succulent minced beef. While lacking a spicy punch, it makes up for it with its full flavour and satisfying meat and onion chunks. The best part of it is the dippers though. The owners had potatoes specially cut into spoon-like fries for this dish. Each dipper is sturdy enough to let you scoop up a hearty spoonful of sauce, but has crisp, thin edges that bring out the fluffiness of the potatoes. It's exactly like what thick-cut fries should taste like with the added bonus of being a spoon! Shiok. Somemore $10.90 only! Remember to share!
#baos. Mitzo's char siew bao damn Shiok man! I can't quite fully remember it all cause I was swimming in a haze of dim sum buffet ($68 per pax) but this one stood out cause of it's gloriously soft bun. Like seriously. SO SOFT. It is the softest bun I've ever had the pleasure of savouring. The dark grey cloud, brushed with a little gold, envelopes chewy little bits of pork. I felt that there was more bread than filling, but I didn't care. I'm a big fan of mantou you see. If you had given me the bao with no filling, I'd still have eaten it happily.
@enchantez_sg sold these adorable cookies at #OpenDeck last weekend and I just had to get one! It came with the paint brush and everything for $8! So you pick the canvas standee, get a palette with four colours (all food colouring) mix with a little water and paint whatever! You can say chemicals yada yada, but I'm like whatever, it's so minute, the worst that could happen would be a blue tongue. The colours came off really delicate too! Taste-wise, the cookies were a little too dry for my taste, but what do you expect? It's to be drawn on! Hahaha #diycookie
