My inner bread slave jumped with joy when I found out about Mont Nom Sod. The Ya Kun of Bangkok, MNS is known to whip out pillow soft bread and a creamy, preservative free Kaya jam. The jam here is thick like curry, smooth like smoothie and tastes so much like coconut, but with a pandan fragrance. Only at THB 70, for 2 huge slices of bread (toasted or steamed), I could have this everyday.
Was so excited to try this because it looked so pretty on other people's plate. But the moment I pulled it apart, I knew it was a mistake. The base is doughy, as opposed on crispy thin (which I personally loved). And it was made more soggy by the sheer amount of 'wet' toppings on top. The pizza flavours were not outstanding, quite disappointing considering that these are supposed the top flavours here. At THB 380, money can be better spent at Roast cafe upstairs.
The perfect escape from the excited throng of shoppers below! Drinks here start from THB130 (approx SGD $5). Run up to one of these rooftop bars for a quick recharge, a pretty view and cheap booze.
Very much loved the amount of spices that went into this - lemon grass, shallots and all sorts of herbs that I am unable to distinguish. The resultant flavour was as herbal as it was porky. Very pleasing on the palette.
Was excited to try Som Tam Nua, only to leave disappointed. The Som Tam here is very mild. While it was spicy, it was more of a slow burn than a spicy kick, which I very much preferred. I still think the best som tams are those by the road.
Proudly fronting the store is a huge banner that says 'Rated #5 Pad Thai in the World by CNN', this store sure knows how to capture a tourist's attention. Double fronted with two kitchens, the Pad Thai noodles is cooked in one kitchen, then conveniently transferred over to the other to be 'wrapped up'. Yes, unlike most pad thais you see on the street, the one here is covered in a crispy batter (similar to the crispy starch from the oyster omelette), giving it a nice crisp as you bite into the al-dente noodles. You can choose among oyster/ seafood / chicken for the protein. We went with the chicken, which was just tough and hard- think it'd be a wider choice to go with any other seafood options. Also, unlike other pad thai stores that pride themselves on a good tamarind sauce, the one here seem to be on the drier side (and hence, also less sweet), which makes it very much similar to the Penang char kway teow. A little more wok hei would make this dish stand out more. Pro tip: this store is supposed to cook up a really good oyster omelette too, so kill two birds in one stone here.
Touted to be one of the best mango sticky rice in the country, Mae Varee's version came at a premium too. At 130 THB (approx $5 SGD), it came with one full mango and a pretty generous potion of sticky rice. We tried the version with 3 rice variants and I daresay the puloh hitam sticky rice was the most fragrant and my ultimate favourite.
🍦🍮🍌🍯🙆🏻 At THB 150 (approx SGD $6), this has got to be the cheapest pancakes I've had! Not out of the world, but it comes with fresh fruits, a really creamy ice cream and decent pancakes.
Comes with every single damn thing you want to have for breakfast - eggs, mushrooms, smoked salmon, potatoes... The Roast breakfast (400 THB) is probably the poster boy for how big breakfasts should be like!
Shashouka that is herbaliscious, luscious and delicious. Was in love with the thick consistency, filled with the most flavourful chorizo, huge blistered tomatoes, juicy crunchy capsicum slices.... Possibly one of the most satisfying Shashouka I've had!!
Thai milk tea soy drink from Vitasoy, which proved to be more soy, less Thai milk tea. But for 13 THB, it's worth trying, once.
We tried Thai milk teas from all around- push carts, eateries, cafes... And found our favourite to be this particular store, claiming to be the original Thai milk tea. With the milk tea being less sweet, we could taste the aroma of the tea leaves more distinctively. And it also lingers in your mouth for much longer
