This burger joint went on the itinerary because Nic loves burgers (as do I) and we weren’t disappointed.
Trying to ration our calories meant that tackling the Altered Beast would have to be a combined effort between both of us, especially when I insisted that skipping the Chilli Cheese Fries was not an option. With a peanut butter milkshake, because why the hell not?
And if there’s one thing I can conclude after this meal, it’s that bacon is a necessity. I mean, just look at those glistening strips of caramelised lardons nestling on the loaded fries!

More for the ‘gram than anything else, although the pretty soft serve – which you can adorn with toppings like torched marshmallow, popping candy and fairy floss – is actually quite yummy. The blue ice cream is the signature sea salt, which they perennially offer alongside one or two seasonal flavours.

The curtains may have closed at The Press Club, but I’ll still remember the meal I had there to be every bit as exquisite as I’d hoped for it to be.
The three-course lunch (bumped up with bread, loukoumades and petit fours) was a meeting of Greek and modern Australian cuisines, where flavours both familiar and new melded together to bless my palate.
A pity about the wage scandals and bad press (pun intended), but you can’t deny that George Columbaris and his team did make magic happen at The Press Club when it was still alive.

Hard to choose just one or two things to eat at the Queen Victoria Market when there’s a never-ending myriad of food stalls – all fronted by glass windows filled with tempting displays.
After circling the food court a couple of times, baby Dutch pancakes it is for me! These bite-sized pillows are so easy to wolf down, and made even tastier with that large helping of custard and mixed berries coulis.

If you want to try something with a bit – okay, a LOT more pow at Burch & Purchese, there’s the Explosive Raspberry Milk Chocolate: layers of raspberry cream, raspberry marshmallow, fresh raspberry compote, chocolate chip cookie, red chocolate velvet sprayed raspberry and milk chocolate mousse, and popping candy.
There’s sour, there’s sweet, there’s creamy, there’s crunchy, there’s rich, there’s crackly... there’s basically a lot going on and I’m all here for it.

I am a fan of fresh, fruity desserts, so the Strawberry & Apple Crumble Tart was one that I thoroughly relished. The pink base is apple compote and strawberry cream in a vanilla tart shell, sprinkled with pine nut crumble. Sitting on top is a cute little green “apple”, which is made of apple mousse and apple jelly.
Put everything together and you get a really lovely blend of textures and fresh, fruity flavours that harmonise as beautifully as the overall composition looks.

Pillar of Salt has kept their menu pretty much the same since I visited in 2017, but the components of the dishes seem to be changed up every now and then.
The Eggs Royale is a menu staple featuring house woodchip and tea-smoked salmon. The variations between the version I had then and the current iteration?
White kimchi vs dill hollandaise, sautéed kale vs chickpea fritter, blanched asparagus vs pickled cauliflower, and togarashi vs soft herbs. Whatever the difference, I’m sure the dish remains a royal treat.

Some things are worth making effort for, and waking up extra-early to be second in line at @lunecroissant is one of those things.
The industrial-looking space at Lune Croissanterie’s Fitzroy cafe is a sight to behold; the main feature being the glass-walled kitchen where customers can openly watch and gape at the chefs manhandling the dough – expertly, of course.
The croissants themselves take a tedious 3 days to be prepped (I watched the process on the latest season of Masterchef AU), and for all that labour, the proof is in the pudding – or should I say, pastry?
The plain Croissant is a triumph. Its outer sheath is baked a glorious, glossy golden-brown, while its inner folds are buttery and pillowy.
On any day, the Ham & Gruyere rendition is the type of savoury breakfast I wouldn’t mind indulging in, and the Cruffin filled with vanilla bean custard is a beautiful mess that I wouldn’t mind polishing off.

This is touted as the “best ramen in Melbourne” and I’m sorry to say that if this is the standard, you’re better off not eating ramen in Melbourne at all.
I found the tonkotsu broth lacking in depth, richness and flavor, and that’s ultimately why the bowl as a whole is a fail for me. The noodles were unmemorable and the marinated egg, overcooked. The most palatable bit was probably the charred slice of grilled pork belly.
I’m genuinely baffled by the 4.5 rating they have on Google, and I remember having to queue for quite some time to get a table. Save yourself the time and calories.
