Found this newly opened Spanish place through Burpple (thanks Xing Wei and Keropok Man!).

Probably because they are still only soft-launched, the food took awhile to come but you could see the chefs trying their best - they were working so fast non-stop! I have to say though, it was worth the wait. The seafood paella at $9 was good for one and well worth it.

Will definitely be back again! 😋

I was compelled to post this straight after my meal, that's how good it was. Situated in the unlikeliest of places, in Vivocity's Food Republic, this is not your average Japanese foodcourt stall. The first promising sign is the ever present smattering of Japanese salarymen patiently queuing for their food. The second, the Japanese cooks behind the counter. Oh, did I also mention they grill their meat over a charcoal fire? I had the salmon and tuna kaisen don (the egg was extra) which featured a bowl of quality Japanese rice overflowing with large chunks of fresh sashimi lightly coated in soy sauce, sesame oil and sesame seeds. Beautiful. A veritable steal at only $9.80 and apparently limited to only 10 bowls a day.

Balzac Bistro offers two options per course for their set lunch and they all sound really interesting.
I picked the foie gras and duck terrine as my starter. But for reasons unknown, it was replaced with duck rillette today. Not that I'm complaining because it was tasty and attractively presented with toasted baguette, pickles and salad. The pan seared sea scallops dish was my choice of main course. Fresh and succulent, the scallops were accompanied by large meaty mushrooms on a bed of butter squash purée. I decided to close my meal on a sweet note of poached pear (which came cubed and still quite crunchy) and champagne sabayon.
The set lunch menu at Balzac is pretty good value in my view, especially with the house-made bread (served with butter plus a chickpea dip), and the atmospheric Parisian bistro decor thrown in.

Great value and very well done. The chicken was amazingly tender. All this for just $5!

Simple and good. The char siew is one of my favourite - tender and not too sweet.

Not a crazy foodie, but looking to improve the quality of my daily life without busting my wallet!
