Got my banh mi and donut fix from Parisian sandwicherie-deli Nonette at RASA Space in Republic Plaza recently (this pop-up is available until 4 October, I believe). And opted for their Apéro Box, which comes with the combo of one bánh mì, one donut and two éclairs for $19/$26. What great value!
I had their signature baguette back in 2022 for their one-weekend-only collab at Tiong Bahru Bakery’s Fort Canning, so I am happy to report that they are as good as I remembered them to be, as the ingredients tasted fresh, and I generally think that the sandwich flavour is flavourful yet clean and well-balanced, not overly punchy. I ordered the Jambon Beurre ($12), a light, crispy-crusted toasted baguette slathered with pâté and butter, loaded with house-made charcuterie, pickled radish, pork floss, and coriander: savoury and umami.
For the sweets, the box came with two of their éclairs, the Tau Suan and Black Sesame Éclair. An ingenious pairing of whipped mung bean and crispy “you tiao” chips in a French patisserie classic. Whilst the other was filled with black sesame creme patissière and praline, it was an earthy, nutty and aromatic toasted sesame-studded two-bite treat. And between the two donut options, Kaya Donut and (funky sounding) Chilli Oil Chantilly Donut, it was an easy choice for me as the crowd-pleasing Kaya custard was smooth, slightly salty and sweet with the fine sugar coating.
