It seems like the trend for Malaysia-style Char Siew is raging of the late, considering that we have checked out the new Sinful Roast at Geylang fairly recently, and now, Char Siu Lang, located within a coffeeshop at Blk 2 Jalan Bukit Merah just a few units away from Geometry and a stone’s throw away from ABC Brickworks Market & Food Centre.

Offerings their noodles in the same style as Roast Paradise and Sinful Roast/Sin Cuisine, the Hakka noodles are served with the typical mee kia (as opposed to the mee pok that Roast Paradise serves up) tossed in a savoury sauce with or without chili, depending on the patron’s choice. The noodles are springy with a good bite being slurpy and all, but it comes without saying that the true stars here would be the roast meats; the Char Siu itself is as fatty as I would have wanted them to be (the stall allows patrons to indicate on their preferred fattiness level of the meat; we went for the fatty parts) — absolutely melt-in-the-mouth tender and gelatinous; sweet from the marination that hints of a tinge of malt with the exterior being sticky, yet well crusted. The Roast Pork is also worth a mention; aptly savoury, the meat comes without any undesirable strong, porky stench whilst still retaining its moisture with crackling crisp skin over the top. We also liked how the minced meat provides a slight hint of sweetness that laces around the savoury noodles for a flavoural contrast. The egg is an add-on of $1; does carry characteristics of a ramen egg with a creamy yolk in the middle.

Pretty impressed with the roast meats that they have to offer — would say that their variant seems to come very close to that which is being served at Roast Paradise which is indeed a blessing for those who lives around this part of the island. Would say that it also works as a good alternative to having a meal at ABC Brickworks Market & Food Centre (for now, at least) given how the food centre is pretty crowded on weekday lunches. That being said, Char Siu Lang does seem to sell out and close rather early in the afternoon; still somewhere that I would reckon that is a must-visit in Alexandra for good roast meats and Malaysia-style Char Siu!
