Picnic Café is yet another newly opened eatery in The Midtown in Hougang. Unlike its seniors that have been in operation longer, Picnic Café wisely chose to focus on savory entrees instead of hopping on the desserts and pastries bandwagon. However, like everything else served here, the chef takes the desserts really seriously too, as almost all their pastries and desserts are made in house, and the mascarpone cheese for their Bailey's cheesecake is even made in house (or so I've been told by the guy manning the cash register).

Anyways, back to today's main event. Their Crackling Pork Belly was simply smashing. The skin on the sensationally savory pork belly lived up to expectations, and much like the knockout knuckles I had at Brotzeit just a week prior, the skin was akin to keropok (traditional prawn crackers) and when I bit down into it, the rind separated cleanly with an almighty crunch. Forget about table manners and chewing silently, this bad boy is louder than most drunks. The flesh is terrifically tender, and full of savory flavor.

Unfortunately, the fat within the pork belly wasn't quite thoroughly cooked, as it was still rather gelatinous (although completely opaque, thankfully), and the porky odor was pretty strong. Other than that hiccup, I thoroughly enjoyed every morsel of this really rad roasted pork belly. Terrifically T H I C C French fries-heck, it's more like potato wedges than fries, and a side of salad round out this plate of porky pleasure at $22 nett. Yep, no GST or service charge at this joint.

For a three day old (at time of writing) eatery that's still in soft launch, Picnic Café operates like a well oiled machine. Almost everything on the menu was available, and service was satisfactory. Picnic Café is so young, yet so full of promise.
