Meticulously grilled to crispy perfection and stuffed generously with crunchy bean sprouts and sliced cucumber, Tiong Bahru Market’s Tow Kwar Pop makes for the perfect snack in between meals. As my first ever tau kwar pop (beancurd puff), I didn’t know what to expect but the balanced combination of sweetness, savouriness, nuttiness and tinge of tanginess really hit the spot. Lightly coated with prawn paste sauce and topped with a good handful of grounded peanuts, the condiments were thankfully not overpowering as you can still taste the other elements - the flavours coming together harmoniously and just complementing one another. And by serving the sauces separately, I was able to enjoy all the textures of the fruits, fried dough fritters and tofu puffs as they retained their crisp as well as crunch till the very last bite!
