Omakase

The grandest foodie gesture you can give your loved one is an omakase sushi experience, and a meal at Oribe will be one for the books. Be sure to secure seats by the counter for the best view of the sushi-making process by the master. P.s If you’re here celebrating a special night, let the team know, and they'll likely fix something up for you.

Pretty please?

Also, to reiterate since there'll likely be people going this holiday season: get a counter seat. And you can probably skip the omakase. Get the set with the most sushi because that's the star here, the sushi. All the sushi. Its all fantastic. .

Anyway, fantastic sushi all around over at Oribe. Upon recommendation, I had the Mino set (the one with the most sushi) which turned out to be a pretty good decision/suggestion. Their appetiser, chawanmushi and dessert are executed well but aren't quite remarkable enough to warrant ordering sets with more non-sushi/sashimi pieces. And omakase might be an option better to consider only once you've become a regular at Oribe - or you risk getting very similar pieces to what you'd get on a Mino set. .
.
But back to the sushi: it was wonderful. The servings are split into two sections, with the first building up from more straightforward, delicate fish into the crescendoing fattiness of the ootoro. The second features much sweeter pieces (eg. gloriously sweet Hokkaido scallops and shrimp), with a number of them torched on the top to different degrees, building the smokiness gradually through the section. What an experience! .

This spacious 40-seater restaurant is a labour of Chef Hideaki Oritsuki's lifelong (knife)work and his excellent sushi keeps diners coming back for more. Nestled within ViPod Residences, the restaurant's top spot is a bar seat across from chef Ori — it comes with a conversation with the chef and a good view of his effortless sashimi-slicing. Bring a foodie friend who will match your enthusiasm in the experience. The omakase menu starts from RM350 and is the best representation of chef Ori's prowess. Thankfully, there are also the more affordable lunch sets available from RM128 that will still get you sushi made by the master. Go for the Iga (RM168) that includes eight pieces of chef specialty sushi with appetisers and sides. Hope for the maguro (tuna), horse mackerel and flounder sushi, all to be enjoyed on the chef-curated ceramic ware from Japan — rounded, green plates that are believed to soothe your senses and enhance the dining experience.
