Fried Porridge

Located jus a stones throw from popular establishments like Cheng Mun Chee Kee Pig Organ Soup & Chye Seng Huat, 3 times I went there; thrice they've never dissapoint with their Signature Royal J's Seafood Fried Porridge (available in $6 or $15).
~
Royal J's literally “fry” their Japanese pearl grain porridge in a wok with an abundance of unami morsels including oh so crispy pork lard, yam cubes, shredded dried cuttlefish, dried shrimps, chives & shredded crab in a superior broth consisting of the Chef's homemade brown sauce whose recipe is a closely guarded secret. Recently, Chef John has opened a new air-conditioned restaurant in Bishan Street 11 introducing new dishes along with it. Whilst I've yet to try the rest of the dishes other than their signature fried porridge, I'm sure I'll eventually do so who's with me! ~

The fried porridge was special, had this tzechar claypot smell, with bits and pieces of taro and shredded meat in it. Fried beehoon was v fine, but the ingredients were just too pathetic for a $6 portion. As for the chicken I found it too dry. And it was v difficult to eat with all the bones in it.
.
(Hehehe and we both almost found ourselves without cash when paying for the order (luckily it was before we ate it). I only had $2 in my wallet 😱.Thankfully he had emergency money hidden in his wallet 🙊🙊. Me don't bring a lot of cash around - my mentality is if I don't have cash with me, it makes it more difficult for me to buy things (usually food and snacks) and will make me rethink my decision lol) #burpple

I have yet to try this till now. I remembered, the first time I went there, the waiting time was 3 hours long just to try their famous fried porridge. I totally gave up. Now, since I was nearby the vicinity I decided to try it again. This time the wait was only 20 mins.

Different from it counterparts, the Royal Js fried porridge is stirred fried with ingredients like yam cubes, dried cuttlefish, dried shrimps and finally topped up with chives and pork lard fritters. Not only was the porridge texture thick, it carries a strong wok flavour with the pork lard as a flavour enhancement. The only thing that I did not quite like was the yam powdery feel and the lack of meat.

Overall, I had an enjoyable experience and I will drop by there once again to try their zi char menu. Oh ! and I have notice that 88 Roasted meat specialist have shifted to the opposite road which I heard so many good reviews about it

Fried porridge!! In short - i liked it! Many ppl says no wok hei flavour, it's true... but for this dish, i don't expect any wok hei so it's good. If i have to q or make a considerable effort to go there, then it's not really worth it. First came to know of this place through @justinfoodprints

Pros: Tastes awesome! Generous for single portion.
🍜
Cons: Quite salty. Texture similar to mushy yam paste/carrot cake - like eating gloop. Drifts between nice & weird. Very little shredded chicken.

The fried porridge is so yummy!

This porridge was fried in the wok with yam, dried shrimps and cuttlefish, before serving in the claypot.
🔸
I like that it's thick, starchy, with some wok fragrance, and that variation in texture as it was served with pork lard, lots of spring options and fried shallots. I didn't like the taste of yam in the porridge, but that's my personal preference. But that brown sauce was savoury and yummy without being overly salty. It's thick but ain't too heavy, such balance. I finished this whole claypot by myself!

If you're there, drop by the 88 Roast Meat Specialist opposite the road for super good roast pork!

Felt that it lacked the "wok hei" I expected it to have but then again who wants burnt porridge. However, the porridge had a great consistency and the flavours were good overall. The lard gave it body while the spring onions lifted the taste with its freshness. The cuttlefish strips were a nice addition to the overall texture.

Finally got to try the Fried Porridge at Royal J's Seafood tonight - an interesting experience. The flavour's just right, tastes like mushy Asian yam cake, and I love the amount of chopped spring onion topped over it 😍🤤 Happy Valentine's Day to all... may you always be surrounded by your loved ones.

The fried porridge was formerly sold at Macpherson and has since moved to Foch Road now. It comes in a claypot and has tasty ingredients like shredded cuttlefish, dried shrimps, diced yam, fried shallots, a generous serving of crispy pork lard and spring onions for $15 (large). You probably can't imagine how it tastes but I tell you, it's definitely worth a try!

Loved the prawn paste chicken and the fried porridge, but the latter was too big for 3 of us to finish 😅 Consider buying the small portion and more ingredients :> #burpple #burpplesg #tslmakan #stfoodtrending #tzechar #igsg #sgfood #sgfoodie #jiaklocal #exploresingapore
