As my list of waffles get longer, I really wonder if they have become my substitute for breakfast and lunch. Along the stretch of Wimbly Lu is Rokeby, a quaint café with excellent service. Instead of the usual Egg Benedict for lunch, I opted for their Fruits & Nutella Waffles - something I'd gladly indulge in. For $11.90, you get strawberries, blueberries and bananas on top of Nutella, with icing sugar coated waffles. I loved how crispy yet fluffy the waffles were, and I loved the presentation even more. This waffles are definitely a must try - kudos to the chef for making such delicious waffles!
Finally got to try the waffles at Grin Affair that my friend was talking about! I'm not a fan of ice cream (cue the dramatic "what do you mean you don't like ice cream?"), but sometimes, exceptions are made, especially with the horrendously erratic weather. Served with a Cookies & Creme gelato, this $9 waffle came with the shop's little snacks that can be found sold in jars. The matcha flavored snack was not my favorite, however the chocolate flavored snack was not bad! It's albeit hard to cut through and will send your snack flying (trust me). Other than that, the waffles were made of soy meringue and were definitely different from the others I've tried. It's a little fluffy, and a little crispy on the outside. The best part of this dish? The Cookies & Creme!
Fancy a set meal? Kazokutei has plenty for you to choose from! I chose one of their special dishes, the Mentai Cream-based Udon - to be honest, I actually peeked over at the other table to spot a lady having it that's why I decided to order it (indecisive moment there). Besides the udon, the $15.90 set came with a side of your choice - fried chicken, or California maki, as well as a chawanmushi unlike any other. Top up an additional $1 for tea, or $1.90 for a soft drink to complete your meal. This was a cream based I've never tasted with udon before, I think it's mostly found blown torched over a salmon sashimi sushi. Unfortunately, I couldn't even finish half the portion as the whole set was way too filling for me. Moreover, the cream base made the udon super "jelat" after a while. Nonetheless, their chawanmushi is something you should try - I believe it has mentai inside too! The color is somewhat brown, not like the usual yellow color from the eggs that is used. This place is definitely worth a go, but be warned - only head over when you have a stomach that is totally empty, otherwise you'll not only be wasting money, but food as well.
You would never expect a $19.90 steak to be as tasteful as this. Marché Wövenpick's weekly specials has the Angus Beef Steak up for grabs! Described as an "Angus Beef Steak with Potato Salad and Asparagus", this dish is large enough so that two can share it and fill their stomach. The two thin slices of steak was cooked to a medium-well done state, easy to cut through and chew. Grilled with a non-spicy somewhat black pepper-like sauce, the steak was indeed delicious but started to become more "jelat" as I reached the three-quarter mark of the steak. The potato salad however, was actually basic mashed potato. You will have to add the condiments (salt, black pepper, chili flakes) provided on the side to add a little more zest. The asparagus was plain, but a little tough to chew through for my liking.
Located at POMO, Montana Brew Bar plays with waffles the unusual way. With flavors such as matcha and cinnamon apple, the truffle lover in me chose the Truffle Jalapeño Mac & Cheese ($12.50) with a fluffy soufflé base. The waffle was delicious, with an interesting take. Savory, this waffle comes with a Jalapeño dip that is not spicy. With the waffle cut into quarters, the portion may seem small but do not underestimate it - it will fill your stomach to the brim. Do bring along a friend and share a waffle as it could be too filling for a person to have one alone! If you're looking to take gorgeous Instagram photos, here's a tip - sit near the middle, behind the wall with utensils, as having the black background can make your food pop!
