If I didn't tell you, would you believe that this soup was vegan? 🌱

The bakwan kepiting soup, a Peranakan dish, is traditionally made with prawns, crab meat, pork and pork bones. To appeal to a more diverse groups of diners, The Peranakan recently launched a vegan Tok Panjang set, with this omnipork soup being one of the dishes.
.
The soup was a combination of papaya and cabbage, and overall flavourfully sweet. The best part though was the "meat" balls! They taste almost the same as the usual ones, with even the textures right on point with chewy tendons! Psst: We heard that the "meat" balls are made of soy, rice, shitake mushroom etc. Can't believe it! 😜

To be honest, I had initial reservations about this bakery (not heard of the brand before), but was keen to try after I learnt that it supplies mooncakes to hotels and restaurants. Indeed, they were good - the paste was smooth and overall not very sweet! The bakery also allows customers to pick and mix the mooncake flavours, and can deliver within 60 minutes of online order.

Mooncake fever heats up in this final week before the festival! So, do you prefer traditional flavours (e.g. lotus paste with yolk) or different ones?

This year, Mandarin Orchard unveils a new flavour - the elegantly gold-dusted Charcoal-baked Yuzu and Mixed Nuts with Black Sesame Paste! While my parents can be quite traditional (no snowskin for them 😜), I was surprised that they liked this flavour. The black sesame was rich, and nuts/ dried golden yuzu offered good contrasting colour and texture.

Btw, one of the allures of buying mooncakes is also the beautiful packaging. Just look at this modern turquoise tower box with pops of fuchsia! Spot the hotel's signature lattice pattern, accentuated by a motif of peony flowers in copper foil stamping.

Went for buffets for the last 2 consecutive days! Am still feeling a bit guilty, but no regrets.

For this Hilton buffet, overall, I found it super value-for-money. How to find a decent buffet for less than S$35/pax nowadays? My favourite were the fresh sashimi and cheesecake. While there were quite a few tables of guests from a business event, the crowd cleared in 1+hour and it was really nice and quiet.
.
Highlights of the buffet included the cold seafood bar, fresh sashimi and sushi, made-to-order noodles, Indian food, Chinese dim sum, local favourites like satay, desserts such as chocolate fondue and their signature cheesecake etc.

Buffet is available till end September 2019. Ooh and I guess I better go for more yoga sessions this week! 🧘♀️

As some of you already know, I have been baking my own mooncakes for several years already. To push the boundaries a little further this year, I decided to bake ondeh ondeh inspired ones. Ondeh ondeh, a type of Peranakan kueh, is one of my most favourite local desserts, as I love how the gula melaka playfully squirts into my mouth as I bite into them.
In these fusion mooncakes, I make use of the various ingredients of the ondeh ondeh, such as gula melaka, desiccated coconut, pandan (pandan coconut paste from @KCTSoya) etc. Whilst this mooncake will look closest to the original kueh in snowskin form, I decided to have them baked as I am wary about the (unhealthy) shortening used in snowskin mooncakes.

Interestingly, apart from the usual menu, the restaurant offers their famous Tok Panjang set in vegan option. 🌱 Just look at the smorgasbord of food here.

The chefs took 6 months to perfect the menu, to ensure that the flavours aren't compromised. Indeed, we found that the dishes overall tasted similar to the real stuff and we felt less (calorie)-guilty, knowing that our dinner was largely vegetable and soy-based. My favourite was the Nasi Ulam although it was recreated without the usual minced fish/ salted fish.

Btw, you need to try their Sambal Belachan too. The usual dried shrimps were replaced by seaweed, but still just as good. Shiok!

Here's a jelly cake made by my in-laws' helper! I had suggested that she could consider replacing water with green tea but she creatively made this double-layered jelly instead.

The top was made of pure green tea, while the bottom was the usual osmanthus wolfberry one. I think she's pretty talented, don't you agree? 😉
