Not a huge fan of pulled pork (I don’t mind it but I don’t absolutely lurrrve it), but this pulled pork sandwich looks so amazing on IG, I knew I had to try it some day. And my lucky day came when Julius and I asked for the next day’s breakfast menu, and it was THIS pulled pork sandwich ($5.80)!

Left to cook overnight, the pork nicely shreds into little bits. Complementing it is caramalized onions and cheese!! Is there a better combination that that? It was SO good, I swear Julius finished it before he reached the first traffic junction which was just 20 steps away.

Probably the best gyoza ($5) in town. Simple, unassuming, flavourful gyoza pieces that are crispy on the outside, juicy on the inside, with not too much skin. Paired with white vinegar here, the combination goes perfectly!

Saw some people making their own spicy vinegar chili base, similar to the Chinese Spicy wanton (ēŗ¢ę²¹ęŠ„ꉋ), with the available condiments and I am so interested to try that the next time round.

A cheap-ish alternative to the Japanese food within the area. Gyoza no Osho is most well known for their gyoza itself and I’m sad to report that their Tonkutsu Ramen ($15) is pretty bland. Noodles were slightly overcooked and the soup base just want creamy enough. However, it could be saved by throwing in heaps of chili sauce (found in a container on the side of the table). The result will remind you of the Ajisen Volcano Ramen (but less spicy).

White beehoon has been all the rage recently with multiple stores popping up to serve up plates of ocean goodness. The one at the famous Bedok 85 hawker centre doesn’t lack luster either. At $5 a plate of pure Lala beehoon (+$2 for 4 slices of fish), the plate was reeking of umami flavors. The soup wasn’t too salty either, we managed to finish up the entire plate without much difficulty. A great alternative to the famous soup bachormee here.

This spicy wings at Mrs Pho House is truly spicy. But I like the nice chili marinade that coated into their crispy skin. That juicy tender chicken meat is also to die for.

Best paired with a cup of Việt coffee to neutralize the heat.

The best thing to get on a cold and rainy day is this bowl of YTF ($5.50 for large portion). Handmade YTF bits that are fresh and super flavorful, drenched in a sweet clear broth and white bee hoon (comes with free top up), a small bowl definitely isn’t enough. I finished the large bowl with no difficulty either. The chili and sweet sauce is a must!

Green Dot is my go-to vegetarian cafes especially for this bowl of Mushroom Bowl with Laksa broth. Expect all the lemak-ness of a typical non vegetarian laksa bowl, topped with a generous serving of mushrooms. Best paired with the sesame rice!

Really serves up authentic heng hwa food at a fraction of restaurant price. A medium bowl of lor mee (pictured) costs less than $10 and its definitely more than enough to eat. I wouldn’t really recommend the other dishes as they aren’t outstanding, though still tasty. The lor mee and bee hoon itself are worthy of the trip down already.

A little bird told me the sweet and sour pork here is super good.

Now who doesn’t love a flaky buttery chocolate croissant for breakfast? Best paired with a cup of flat white !

Really? Granted, the gyoza here are more than decent, but to be rated no. 1 is really quite a big hat to fill... Nevertheless, at $4.80/ 5 pieces, I believe that’s the best value you can get in town. I liked how the gyozas are plump with minced pork, and how the skin is nicely crisp, but I thought the skin felt a little too ā€˜commercial’. Still, I’ll be back.

The upgraded version of the original mentaiko. I thought the mentaiko flavour was pronounced and flavourful but I didn’t feel it blended well with the gyoza. Furthermore, the sauce reduced the crispness of the gyoza ):

This Buta Ramen ($7.80, +$2 for spicy) is so damn spicy, it kind of reminds me of the the spicy volcano chilli from Ajisen Ramen. While tasty, I thought the noodles was overdone and the soup was a little too oily. Portion was kind of small too. But that portion of Chashu is quite generous.
