Yet to try the many renditions made available in Singapore, I was pretty excited to get my hands on Red Rock アメ村店 Americamura's Roast Beef Don (815¥) and was glad that it didn't disappoint. Though not mind-blowing considering the many rave reviews and the other exceptional meals that I had in Japan; it was a sight to behold. No tough, dry or overly chewy meat here, the stack of sliced beef was tender and nicely seasoned. Very satisfying, the small heap was also nicely complemented by the tangy white yogurt sauce as well as raw yolk which added a smooth richness to the bowl.
Furthermore, in view that it was my second lunch of the day and was rather full mid-meal, the combination didn't cut my enjoyment of the braised beef one bit. And while there was a snaking queue (I waited about 15 minutes in the cold) with mostly tourists dragging their luggage in line, the service was prompt and friendly.

Frequented by locals, the place was packed during lunch hours so best to head down early.

Their main dish was Kuay Jup (THB60), clear pepper-base soup with rice noodles, crispy pork belly and pork entrails. Or those who aren’t a fan of entrails, you can choose tender pork slices instead. The soup was just right and not overly peppery as you slurp up those soft rolled up rice noodles.

But the highlight will be their Signature Crispy Pork (THB55/plate or THB550 for 1KG). Perfectly done with the right amount of meat to fat layer and an incredibly crispy skin at the top. Dipping into the dark sweet sauce, these are so crackling good that we devoured it down in no time.

Chilling and getting a glass of frothy nitro cold brew (THB 90) will be a good idea especially during CNY house visiting. For adventurous souls, you can try their popular Kai Kem Latte aka Salted Egg Latte (THB 120). Made of concentrated cold brew coffee with caramelized Chaiya salted egg and peanut butter syrup, it’s a perfect balance of sweet and savoury!

This cosy new bar/dinner place does their pickles really well, but what stole my heart was the Rice Cracker which came with a miso cream, which we licked clean even after we finished the crackers, savouring the last bits and dying to figure out what went into this insanely addictive dip.

To prevent disappointment we made a reservation earlier on in our trip.

Lamb Ragu gnocchi with duck egg. Flavours were en pointe but gnocchi was too soft for our liking.
.
🍴
Their fries were perfect though. Freshly cut potatoes and freshly fried.
.
🍴
Crab cakes Benedict was also great. Rosti was perfectly crisp. Flavours of crab cakes were great but would have preferred a slightly crispier texture. (Or did I let it sit too long before consuming?) The caramelised onions was a perfect filler for the diff flavours! .
🍴
Then wash it down with a cup of magic before going round emquartier to shop 😛

Absolute food satisfaction and the wonderful balance of flavours from the smokiness of the meat to the freshness of the pickled radish makes it such a worldwide favourite.

For the BBQ pork versions, it’s just amazing how the Vietnamese is able to balance not only the flavours but also provide a myriad of textures in their dishes as you get the crunchiness from the vegetables, crispiness from the baguette and melts-in-your-mouth pork patties.

As for the meatloaf sandwich, the umami-ness from the liver pate with several cuts of ham and the addition of pork floss brings the sandwich to a whole different dimension. What a way to start off my Vietnam journey.

Don’t get me wrong, this is a very good banh mi but it’s just that the other two places that I’ve been to are so much tastier even though they do not have a reputation as big as Bánh Mì Huỳnh Hoa. With a legendary standing and mass following, Bánh Mì Huỳnh Hoa is so popular that there will queues of people in line waiting throughout their operating hours. It can even afford to open only from 3:30pm onwards daily but yet sales have definitely not been affected a single bit. Only having a single item in the menu and easily one of the more expensive sandwiches around at 36.000 VND each, you will be rewarded with slices of meat, pate, pork floss and pickled vegetables inside the baguette. However, there is just something that I cannot put my head and palate to that is lacking which makes this ranked 3rd in my list.

My second pit stop of my Thai street food trail brings me to Heng Chun Seng, famous for their beef fire pot (180/250 THB) due to the red hot charcoal in the middle. This is an all-out-no-holds-barred-everything-beef extravaganza that you can ever dreamt off. From beef innards to beef slices and beef balls, it couldn’t get any beefier than this. Bubbling under the charcoal cauldron, the rich broth has a cloudy consistency, the result of the essence of the beef, and every mouthful has a certain sweetness flavour while the morning glory brings a certain lightness and freshness to it. Grab a bowl of rice, mix up some chili sauce and you are in for a comforting experience.

The Alsdann burger comes with grilled pear, mild blue cheese and walnuts. The blue cheese really stood out and made the dish - it was really creamy, and not too intense, and complimented the beef really well. The pear added some sweetness which the walnuts gave it a nice crunchy texture. One of the more interesting options on their menu, and definitely worth trying!
