Although one would usually think of chains like Mrs Pho or So Pho when you think of Vietnamese food, ๐๐ค๐ฃ๐ ๐๐๐ช๐ฃ๐ ๐๐๐๐ฉ๐ฃ๐๐ข๐๐จ๐ ๐พ๐ช๐๐จ๐๐ฃ๐ is a hidden gem that the real Vietnamese in Singapore go to.
I feel that you can judge a good Vietnamese eatery based on the quality of their pho, so I ordered a bowl of ๐๐ฅ๐๐๐๐๐ก ๐ฝ๐๐๐ ๐พ๐ค๐ข๐๐ค ๐๐๐ค (Phแป Dแบทc Biแปt, $8.90) to see for myself. The Special Beef Combo is like a zhnged-up version of your usual beef pho, with slices of beef, beef brisket and a raw egg that you can whisk in and cook in your piping hot soup.
Another item on Long Phungโs menu was the ๐๐ฅ๐๐๐ฎ ๐ฝ๐๐๐ ๐๐ค๐ค๐๐ก๐๐จ (Hแปง Tiแบฟu Bรฒ Kho, $7.90), which caught my eye because itโs something quite special that you donโt usually find in other Vietnamese restaurants (at least, not in Singapore). The spicy beef stew is richly flavoured, and I could taste hints of spices like star anise. The beef was incredibly delicious, generous and fall-apart tender.
Of course, whatโs a meal at a Vietnamese restaurant without Vietnamese Coffee? I ordered a hot and iced ๐๐๐๐ฉ๐ฃ๐๐ข๐๐จ๐ ๐พ๐ค๐๐๐๐ (Cร Phรช Phin Sแปฏa Dรก/Dรณng, $4), both of which were rich and chocolatey, a perfect blend of aromatic Robusta coffee and creamy sweetened condensed milk. I especially love how they serve the hot coffee with the drip, just like in Vietnam.
I made a video on the ๐ฝ๐๐จ๐ฉ ๐๐๐๐ฉ๐ฃ๐๐ข๐๐จ๐ ๐๐ค๐ค๐ ๐๐ฃ ๐๐๐ฃ๐๐๐ฅ๐ค๐ง๐, featuring Long Phung versus Mrs Pho. Check it out on YouTube now, so you can find out which is the best Vietnamese restaurant to go to! https://youtu.be/RQR_kX7VOY8

Ever since my trip to Korea, I fell in love with Korean spicy cold noodles (bibim nangmyeon). And now Iโve found a decent one in SG at ๐ช๐๐-๐๐๐ ๐ฎ๐๐๐ ๐๐ ๐ฒ๐๐๐๐๐ ๐น๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐!
The ๐ฒ๐๐๐๐๐ ๐บ๐๐๐๐ ๐ช๐๐๐ ๐ต๐๐๐ ๐๐๐ (๐ฉ๐๐๐๐ ๐ต๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐), $18, is a bowl of buckwheat noodles served in a chilled icy broth, with sweet and spicy gochujang sauce, slivers of Korean pear, radish pickles, slices of beef brisket and a half-boiled egg with a soft and fudgy centre. Though the beef is a bit tough and dry, the whole dish is still deliciously refreshing, especially in Singaporeโs hot weather.
Other than the cold noodles, they also serve BBQ and other Korean dishes. I tried the ๐บ๐๐๐๐๐๐ ๐ท๐๐๐๐ ๐บ๐๐๐๐๐๐ ๐บ๐๐๐ (๐บ๐๐๐๐๐๐ ๐ซ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ ๐ฑ๐๐๐๐๐), $13.80, and the ๐ฒ๐๐๐๐๐ ๐บ๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐ ๐ท๐๐๐ (๐ฒ๐๐๐๐๐ ๐ฑ๐๐๐๐๐), $11.80, which are served in a claypot that keeps the stew piping hot till the last drop. Would have liked a bit more generous pieces of pork in the kimchi jiggae though.
A bonus to eating at Chowon Garden is the feast of banchan they serveโ5 small plates of side dishes with every meal, just like in Korea! The side dishes rotate on a daily basis, so you may try different dishes on different days. Iโve tried the Seasoned Seaweed, Kimchi, Seasoned Beansprouts, Stir-Fried Fishcake, Vegetable Noodle Salad, Spicy Braised Tofu... But my fave has got to be the Soy Braised Potatoes, which is soft, sweet and caramelised.
