We couldn't decide what we thought about the cheesecake. You couldn't taste the cheese really, it was overtaken by the azuki beans. The matcha later was strong and bitter - I quite enjoyed this. The goma ice cream was only ok, quite milky and not as much sesame flavour. I've defo had better at Japanese restaurants.
Unagi Chahan ($12)
My favourite of the lot. The Japanese rice was nicely seasoned and fried with unagi pieces - there was a distinct wokhei to this fried rice and polished off this plate quite quickly.
Sukiyaki ($18.50)
The broth was a little salty for my liking, otherwise it was ok. The slices of beef were tender, there was a good variety of veggies and tofu.
Salmon Mentai Aburi Maki Roll ($18.80)
Quite nice. You get 8 pieces but they were a little on the smaller side.
Hamachi Kama-shio ($16.80)
Super tasty and satisfying to clean off this yellowtail collar. But again, not a very generous piece.
I think overall food is good. I'd come back.
A nice minty twist to the cold brew by the people at Tanuki.
A bit of a sad looking poke bowl in my opinion. I got the salad as a base and an extra portion of prawn roe ($1). The fish was quite nicely seasoned, but aside from the leaves and cherry tomatoes - there wasn't much else to this poke bowl. So, it was just ok, decent enough for the price.
A limited edition okonomiyaki burger? Yes please. I love MOS Burger. And true to everything MOS does, this was delicious and a great snack. The seafood patty was loaded with squidy seafood, sweet potato and... other things. No idea, I just ate it. Also, there is an egg. Everything is made better with an egg. I was actually sad when this burger was coming to its end.
If you're super hungry, you might want to get two of these (or the rice burger version) because they are tiny.
The salmon mentai was delishhh. You only get five slices of aburi-ed salmon mentai on a heap of warm udon noodles. The mentai sauce makes for a nice salty dressing for the noodles - though we ran out of salmon way before we ran out of noodles. I'd still have this again though. ☺️
Amazingly the queue wasn't as long as I anticipated - I'm guessing the Sunday crowd wanted a little lie in. We went with a combo of sliced fish + scallop ($14.50), sliced beef ($12.50) and the homemade pork meatball ($12.50) congees. After being warned that the wait would be 30 minutes, we sat patiently sipping rather mediocre coffees from the stall next to Mui Kee (don't bother unless severely caffeine deprived).
The congee was worth the wait though! Smooth and flavourful. I think I read somewhere that they use soy milk? Is that why it's so smooth? Each come with a crispy youtiao and half a runny century egg. Of the three bowls, the sliced fish + scallop was the winner. I never knew porridge could have wok hei. 🤤 This was worth the early wake up call to get here for 7.30am. Also, I never knew but Casa Verde is the perfect spot to dog-watch. So. Many. Doggos.
Note: drunken chicken is only available after 9am.
Crispy on the outside, reasonably fluffy on the inside and so sugary delicious all round.
Just what you need when walking in the sweltering heat. Chanced upon this new kid on the block just 2 doors up from where an old fave (The Plain) used to be - filling up the gaping coffee hole that was left behind on Craig Road. Only managed to grab an iced white to go this visit but based off of this cuppa, I'll defo be back. 👌🏼
Medium bodied, smooth micro foam, a solid cuppa.

I'm not usually a fan of squid ink - too many poor experiences. But this was so good! It was creamy and packed with super ocean umami. Also, squid pieces were buried in the paella like little bouncy treasures.
