At Ghim Moh market, Chuan Kee is one of the crowd’s favourites with snaking queues almost all the time and it’s not hard to see why! At $4, this plate of duck rice was so satisfyingly good. Fluffy braised rice drenched in a rich salty-sweet sauce, generous amounts of tender duck slices and gizzard and braised tofu and peanuts on the side, this was a dream’s come true for someone who has been overseas and missing SG food for a while 😭😭 No wonder it has a Michelin gourmand bib!! 👍🏼 Worth the queue which moves pretty fast or just come slightly off peak to avoid the queues.
This was one HEAVENLY dish.
On the first bite, a creamy luscious creme brûlée with bits of crispy blowtorched caramelised sugar swirls around in your mouth. And within seconds, the characteristic fragrance of foie gras explodes on your tongue, leaving you going ??where did that come from??? This is foie gras (or creme brûlée) gone ROGUE I tell you but I thoroughly enjoyed it and it was just the right size to not get jelat due to the rich flavours in this dish.
The bf calls me an AKK snob cos I only eat AKKs from here but how can anyone deny the fact that the AKKs here are just out of this world!!! The skin to filling ratio is truly SICK so that every mouthful gives like 70% of the smooth yet not too sweet filling and 30% of the chewy and not too sticky skin.
Pro tip: Must come by 2pm! Tried so many times to get this but they are always sold out due to the lunch crowd.
Tried both the dry and soup BKT (thanks to burpple beyond!) and I just can’t decide which I like better! When the dry BKT arrived at our table, the strong claypot wokhei wafted to our noses and indeed, the taste didn’t fail to deliver with a sweet and mildly spicy kick! We had this as a mix of pork ribs, pork belly, pig tail and pig intestines.
The soup BKT was flavourful on a whole new level (or should I say many levels) - first the mildly bitter herbal taste hits you but the sweetness slowly emerges to balance out the former, leaving an overall umami flavour. While the soup was super on point, the pork ribs were a bit on the tougher side.
Youtiao was good and super crispy!! I enjoyed soaking just half of it in the soup so that I get soup bursting out of the youtiao and the crispy crunch of it all in one bite! 😋
Paid $9 per pax for all these with burpple beyond - yet another great deal!
Braised beef, bacon, chantenay carrots, sautéed mushrooms and crunchy croutons over a bed of mashed potatoes
I really enjoyed this dish!!! 😋 While there wasn’t really a star of the show, all the ingredients really complemented each other well. The beef itself was braised in a mildly sweet red wine beef broth till tender and succulent and the same sauce was a perfect match for the mashed potatoes. I LOVE ALL BREADS so the croutons were a crunchy delight to find to contrast the other textures on the plate.
I know people like Saveur for the duck confit but I think I loved this even more!
This one was sadly a letdown.. While individual ingredients were nice, they just didn’t gel together with the cream sauce which I felt was a little too thin and not creamy enough. Maybe it’s in comparison to the mentaiko... If you’re here, I’d say go for the mentaiko pasta for sure and if you need something to cut the taste of the mentaiko, maybe consider the omu rice which was still not bad! Orrr if you can’t get enough of mentaiko, go for the mentaiko toast!!! No individual photo for that (you can see it peeking in the corner here) but it was 👍🏼👍🏼
A marriage of the 2 best pasta sauces ever, honestly grateful for whoever thought of this wicked idea!!
This is one of the better mentaiko pastas out there that actually live up to its name - burst that egg yolk goodness into the creamy sauce and you’ll get an even more decadent sauce exploding with mentaiko flavour!! Choice of tagliatelle or spaghetti here and I’ll definitely say choose the tagliatelle so you get more surface area to mop up all that sauce 😏😏
$49.90 but used the entertainer app to enjoy the 1-for-1 deal 😊
With a wide variety of dishes to choose from, including sashimi, maki rolls, grilled and fried dishes, you’ll definitely be spoilt for choice! The star of the show for me had to be the sashimi which was thick and fresh with an almost melt-in-the-mouth consistency. The other dishes were average - some of the maki rolls were interesting but not the best (the sauce was kinda funky 😅) while the grilled items were good but not impressive (liked the grilled shishamo though). Overall, not bad a deal to satisfy those sashimi cravings!
Thanks to mi fwens for celebrating my birthday here 🥰
White chrysanthemum with cocoa bits, hazelnut
First tried this at their East Coast outlet with the thyme cone and instantly became a fan - I knew I had to get this when I was at jewel despite the long queues on a weekend. I love how BOP’s botanical-inspired gelato is light without compromising on the flavour. A pity that the jewel outlet did not have the thyme cone - YOU GOT TO TRY THIS, the faint fragrance of thyme exuding from this crispy cone is a 💯
Hearty bowl of beef stew with generous HEAPS of beef, enoki mushrooms and glass noodles. The broth tasted almost like sukiyaki but yet not too sweet and overpowering. For $15, this comes with 12 side dishes and was super worth it for someone who might just enjoy banchans more than the actual Korean dish HEHE. Loved the kimchi cucumber and the fish cake!!! And the staff gladly refilled my banchan for me too yay
Most people come here for the lamian (or shaved noodles, and yes it’s good stuff) but I thought this meat bun deserves a shout-out too! Imagine a pulled pork burger but Chinese style: The pork, with the right lean meat to fat ratio, was stewed in a savoury-sweet sauce until tender. And the buns soaked up the goodness of the meat while still remaining crisp on the outside. A bit pricey at $3.50 but very shiok and surprisingly quite filling!
Back at Da Paolo for pow wow pizza!!! Just 3 main ingredients (truffled mascarpone, mushrooms and truffle oil) to create this simple but well-executed pizza! There was just the right amount of truffle flavour to get us all sniffing the air and salivating when it arrived on our table 😋 I liked the mascarpone cheese which provided a smooth creamy base to the pizza with a tinge of sweetness
