I hope everyone agrees with me that meat tastes so much better on a charcoal grill. Here’s Yakiniku Ohji’s BBQ buffet at 321 Clementi. There are three tiers and prices increase with each tier because of the addition of premium meat. $17.80+ (first tier), $27.80+ (second tier, with Angus beef and US tenderloin), $40.80+ (third tier, same as second tier but with Japanese beef, tongue, harami skirt steak, and inner kalbi).

The seasonal bowl from Tendon Kohaku is back till mid-December. A good mix of meat and vegetables. Chicken breast, prawn, and dory fish were really tender and juicy on the inside, covered by a crisp tempura exterior. Tarnished with chrysanthemum flower petals, renkon chips, and a maple leaf that has been battered and fried too.

Steak was a medium-rare, just how I like it. I would say that the main star would be the steak itself. Salad was unfortunately “old” as the leaves were losing its crunch. It was a little warm inside so having an iced drink really helps.

A bowl of perfectly cooked and seasoned sushi rice topped with premium, thick cuts of the freshest fish/seafood - salmon, tuna, swordfish, squid, scallops, and if I guessed correctly, yellowtail. Oh, not forgetting the flame-seared salmon. Get a counter seat when you’re there. Watch the chefs at work, listen to the click of the blowtorch, the crackling of the salmon being aburi-ed, and the smell of the burning fat. Happy days.

Breaded pork cutlet fried to a crispy perfection while keeping the inside juicy. I decided to go easy on the spiciness level for the curry so I started with level 3 and there was indeed a nice kick. Loved the omelette as it was “medium-rare” but I would have loved it to be thicker. Perks of this place: you get to add more rice/curry (for a fee of course) but I was full just after one plate. There are pickles on the side - a little sweet, as compared to the one at Monster Curry, which I very much prefer.

Prices start from $3, and like all other chicken rice stalls, you can add different kinds of meat as well. My meal was a total of $6 as there’s an additional $1 for roasted pork. Chicken breast was a little dry for me. Chilli was good but probably a little too tangy for me. Rice was quite fragrant and the grains were well-cooked aka not soggy.

Base (choose 2): Sushi rice, purple & green cabbage
Greens (choose 5): Spinach, cherry tomatoes, radish, cucumber, coriander.
Protein (choose 1): Sous-vide free-range chicken breast.
Dressing (choose 1): Roasted sesame.
Lux it up (choose 1): Onsen egg.
Crunch (choose 3): Crispy shallots, sesame seeds, tobiko (fish roe)

I also had a cup of iced organic apple tea for $3. Keep the glass cup and bring it back for a $1 rebate on your iced teas!

The vegetables are as good as it gets - the crunchiness of the radish, salad greens, and cabbage; the sweet and juicy cherry tomatoes; and the fragrance of the coriander - all good enough on its own without the need for a salad dressing. Sous-vide chicken breast is cooked till tender and moist and the slight tinge of vinegar in the sushi rice refreshes your palate. The addition of the “crunch” gives the meal bowl even more textures as well as the flavour from the shallots (an absolute favourite!). Last but not least, the bowl is topped with an onsen egg and my ritual is to break it and mix it into the rice below. The yolk was just a teeny bit overcooked but was still runny. Thank you very much Chef Gan for the meal, Brian for inviting, and Daryl for hosting me despite being so busy! Thank you and I hope to be back soon!

I’ve never had wanton mee for supper but there’s always a first. Hua Kee Hougang Famous Wan Ton Mee at Old Airport Road’s hawker centre. I chose the $5 portion (because it’s me). Springy noodles, great sauce, loads of ingredients, for only $5. Char siew can be more moist but my stomach approves. Oh, if you love soup, you can request for a bigger bowl of soup, and don’t be shy about it.

I figured that a small size wouldn’t last me for very long so I went for the medium. The ingredients were all well-marinated and neatly cut into chunks thus giving a great texture. Garnished with spring onions, sesame seeds, and a small scoop of ikura. Also comes with wasabi that is pretty potent. I would have loved more rice as I found myself having more fish left than rice while halfway into the meal. It’s slightly pricey at $16 for a medium-sized bowl but that is pretty much the price tag on average.

$17.90 for a full set of goodies that will definitely fill you up! Creamy scrambled eggs, bacon and sausages, hashbrown, greens, grilled tomato, and a thick piece of lightly toasted bread.

$4.50 for a small, $5.50 for a large. Springy noodles and it is quite light. Highly recommend the chilli for an extremely good kick!
