Salmon Ikura Don The ikura was probably my favourite part of this dish. Otherwise, it was quite disappointing for a restaurant bearing the name of the famous Japanese fish market in Tokyo. In particular, I had expected a thicker, fresher cut of sashimi.

Festive feasting has begun! 😉😋 That ginger mousse on top the truffle beef bowl was quite interesting, and the truffle fries were crunchy and of the texture that I like, just not exactly truffle-scented (more like regular fries with cheese shavings) 🍟

Something to get off your Chestnut The Mont Blanc ($9) might appear to be really simple and unassuming, but beneath the chestnut cream is fresh cream blanketed over a vanilla sponge and blueberry compote while the frangipane tart contains fresh blueberries. Perhaps considered to be the crowd favourite, the chestnut is no doubt prominent, with the blueberry elements providing the dessert with some sourness for an overall balanced and pleasing taste. 😋

STRAY BY FATCAT, MATCHA WHITE SESAME CAKE While the appearance of the cake resembles our iconic building the esplanade, it wasn't not made to look like it, nor isit made to look like king of fruits, the durian. This is actually a matcha white sesame cake, with a matcha white chocolate cream exterior, a white sesame mousse interior. Encased within the mousse is a rich but not overly strong matcha core. The cake itself is pretty delish, with distinct notes of the matcha and the subtle taste of the white sesame.

Kopi c Peng 1.5nett Not a coffee drinker at all normally but I didn't think it was too mind-blowing, could simply be because idk what I'm talking about. If I had to say anything different from what I expected, it would be that it's pretty smooth I guess.

Kaya Toast We were told to go for steamed kaya toast but couldn't resist the toasted version. Cold slices of butter on warmly toasted bread with the sweetness of kaya - always a favourite!

Homely Peranakan Recent cravings for Peranakan food led me to this slightly hidden stall at Golden Mile Food Centre, and boy was this a good find. Blunt but friendly aunty serving customers and even helping to clear their plates. The Ayam Rendang ($8) came in a sharing portion of chicken and potatoes in a superb aromatic and slightly spicy gravy; and the best part is that the chicken pieces are boneless! The Chapchai ($5) was also really good and in a sizeable portion. Two plates of rice completed the meal for an additional $0.50 a plate. Don't forget to ask for their (very potent) chilli too! Overall, fantastic and homely peranakan fare at a very affordable price. Would definitely return and also wholeheartedly recommend anyone to come by too!

Bakwan Kepiting@$10 Affordable Peranakan Food Alert! Peranakan Food have a reputation of being rather expensive. But not here at Charlie's Located at Basement Floor of Golden Mile Hawker, Charlie's looks rather old school, with a hand written menu/signboard. The lady owner was very nice and friendly. What we had 1) Bakwan Kepiting- damn good. Absolutely love this pork/crab meat balls. 2) Ayam Rendang- Chicken was fresh. The Rendang gravy was thick and flavourful. 3) Chap Chye- Normal dish, nothing really sepcial They have many items on their menu, next time will try their Ayam Buah Keluak

Goodnight sweet prince The beloved dessert bar will be closing this Sunday after years of ingenuity, with their local dishes-inspired desserts being particularly memorable. - Their creations have an uncanny familiarity to them, like this Nasi Lemak ($14.90) which found the right blend of sweetness and savouriness as well as familiar textures, which worked in the context of a dessert. Particularly loved the coconut "rice", which hid a mother lode of pandan mousse — intoxicatingly fragrant.

Lava Molten Cake Chocolate Lava Cake (~$13.90) took awhile to be served, but when it came, I was so eager to eat it 😛 (hence the mediocre photos). Upon slicing the thick dark chocolate cake, warm chocolate fudge flowed nicely to coat the vanilla ice cream below 🍰 Vanilla ice cream was orange infused, which went well with the chocolate, especially since the orange taste was quite obvious 🍦 . Crumbles and Almond Nougat did a good job in adding texture to this lava dessert especially since the cake and the ice cream was soft 🤩 However thought the ice cream could be more bc the cake was quite overwhelming! Nasi Lemak ($14.90) Their version of Nasi Lemak really amazed me by the impeccable presentation and how they managed to recreate the flavours of nasi lemak in dessert form. The most amazing element is their sambal jam, which tasted like the real flavours of sambal! Just a heads up, give them one last try if you like as they’ll be closing before the end of the month!

Soup You Mian There's usually a significant queue. I quite enjoyed it, especially the soup, but maybe it's just I was hungry haha.

Mee Hoon Kueh Dry ($4) Was excited to try this, but it fell short of expectations. It was average at best, and nothing stood out. The mee hoon kway wasn’t clumpy, but it didn’t have that delicious handmade quality, and was a little too thin for my liking. Might go for the soup version next time, hopefully it’s better!

伊面(干) E-Mee (Dry) Comforting, almost like a grown-up Myojo Ramen Char Mee. And the soup is also excellent, so it’s the best of both worlds!

Nice Soup! Ban mian ($4.50 nett) It's common to have very starchy noodles when you order ban mian, and im glad to say Face Ban Mian's noodles had a very soft and springy texture. What also impressed was the light clear soup, unlike the often msg laden broths from other banmian stalls. It wasnt too salty and had a sweet taste Extra points for including streaky juicy pork belly slices too!

Tom Yam Ban Mian The Tom yam soup is flavourful, definitely a must try for all Tom yam lovers. However, (perhaps I selected wrong choice of noodle; I pick ban mian) noodle isn’t chewy, it’s quite thin and taste like those pre-made noodle from supermarts. Hence kinda a little disappointed, personally for me. Food rate 3/5. ⭐️⭐️⭐️

Walked pass by and saw long queue, so I decided to join the queue. First time im trying @facebanmian and I dont really enjoyed it. I'm a noodle person and its not my preferred choice of noodle 😅. its very small portion, with a thin and soft noodle, a few slices of pork belly and more towards to sweeter sauce than spicy. 💰$4.8. 📍Face Ban Mian. 722 Ang Mo Kio Avenue 8.

French Toast Set ($8.20) The French Toast is the most expensive breakfast item on Tong Ah's menu. I will probably order this dish rather than the kaya toast because they are topped with a couple dollops of kaya and slices of butter which allow you to better taste the kaya. The French Toast itself is decent with a nice crepe-like layer of egg coating the bread but there is (of course) not going to be enough kaya or butter to spread on all of the French Toast. I hate to say so but Tong Ah's horribly overpriced. Yes, rental is mad and inflation is painful but Tong Ah does its food no justice with how they try to cut corners and save costs.

Crispy Thin Kaya Toast Set ($6.80) I personally prefer the 'non-traditional' crispy thin kaya toast for its wafer-like crunchy texture. I cannot recall if they charge extra for butter with their kaya toast but the interesting thing is that they would cut it into thin slices and place it in a bowl of ice water to keep it cold and ensure that it keeps its form and does not melt completely when it is served. A lovely touch but my gripe is that the thin stripe of butter was so small that it was as thin as (and if not thinner) than the thin toast itself and left me thoroughly dissatisfied. I can't help but feel that I'm paying more for the old school atmosphere than for the food itself, seeing how they seem to 'stinge' on their ingredients...

Traditional Kaya Toast Set Meal ($6.20) Tong Ah Eating House might not have the same name recognition as Yakun but I am sure everyone knows the iconic white building at the junction of Keong Saik Road and Teck Lim Road. which bears its name in red. The coffeeshop has shifted down the road but continues to retain its old school charm and is most famous for their kaya toast and tze char dishes. Their signature traditional kaya toast features thick soft toasted white bread with kaya spread in between. I knew I was in for a treat as the kaya was a dull greenish grey instead of a pandan green colour. This usually means that the kaya was made in house, fresh and without the use of food colouring. I liked that their kaya was subtly sweet with a nice strong pandan note. My only (big) qualm was that they spread the kaya (very) thinly to the point that parts of the bread seemed to be untouched. For those who are counting, they are charging the same (or similar) to Toastbox (which has attracted some negative press for their pricing). I therefore find it quite hard to categorise it as "cheap and good" as burpple seems to have done.

Not bad A popular choice for no frills meals among the crowd in Bugis, @qqnoodlehousesg serves up rather affordable noodle dishes that were pretty decent! I had the Signature Kolo Mee ($7.50 with extra noodles) with a basic sauce and it was not bad. The noodles were al dente and springy, and although they may look plain, they were very flavourful with pork lard and garlic. I really thoroughly enjoyed the noodles, but unfortunately the ingredients were nothing much to shout about. The char siew was tough and not so flavourful sadly 😥. I can see why it's popular for affordable meals, and I can see myself coming if I just want a simple meal. Not too bad if you're around the area, but maybe not worth it to come down just for this 😂

The House Special This is kolo mee. Good choice if around the vicinity since there’s a wide selections of other dishes to go along with if one likes variety.

#1 Sarawak Noodles [$6] The noodles live up to their name - really QQ! Sarawak sauce was not bad, quite light yet tasty. Only wish they would give more meat. I’ve always walked past this place but never gave it a second look. Thanks to my friend’s recommendation, we discovered a hidden gem! Price is a little steep though. I’m sure we can get similar stuff for <$5 elsewhere.

Fun Japanese Place Fun Izakaya place for a casual drink and meal. They have a good value set course with all you can drink for 2 hours.

Boiled Gyoza [$12] Star dish of the night! So glad to be introduced to this place, now I am able to feed my inner gyoza monster on a regular basis. I am nuts about all kinds of dumplings -potstickers, gyozas, raviolis, mandus you name it. I have a slight preference for gyozas due to the thinner skins used. This gyoza is boiled unlike the usual pan fried ones, and served in a light soy sauce, sesame oil & vinegar blend (reminded me of 红油抄手 but not spicy!) topped with a lot of spring onion and sesame. The filling was very wholesome and substantial! I believe the filling has minced pork and shrimp, will verify when I go back to satisfy my craving again 😋

Chicken Nannban [$6] Fried chicken with tartar sauce. Succulent juicy chicken thigh pieces coated with a nice crispy batter with the most awesome chunky pink tartar sauce. Perfect grub that goes perfectly well with their draught suntory premium malt! 😋
