滷肉飯 Lor Bak Png (Soy Braised Pork Rice) My curiosity had the better of me when I went into Clifford Centre jolly well knowing that the food scene on the ground floor has not changed over time. So wasn't really clear what to expect. I almost gave up when I noted the unit number was a stall selling nasi lemak, which honestly wasn't too delectable looking. When I knew that the Lor Bak Png is available and eventually holding this bowl of piping hot rice, I know my curious its and persistence paid off. The braised pork is melt in your mouth delicious as the fats and meat were nicely caramelised and melts into the rice - which is decent by its standards. The Lor Bak Png, accompanied by the zucchini pickle and chili oil (辣椒油) was an absolute delight and more than make up for the lackluster outfit. This is what comfy food is about.

Heavenly 卤肉饭 from 一把火🔥 Here's a humble melt-in-your-mouth bowl of comfort food, with the steaming white rice doused in generous lu-rou sauce. The best is the tender fats of the meat. Will definitely come back here again for this bowl which is as delicious as it is value-for-money. PS. the crispy chili accompanying it also added a punch to the taste! ($4.80 including meat upsize and egg)

Ebikatsu & Egg Mayo Headed down to Takashimaya for some shopping because things just kept breaking of the late — was more of just looking for a quiet spot that I don’t have to jostle with the crowds to dine at since I was hungry and didn’t really want to do all the shopping before I had my dinner. Got reminded of Grand Jete Cafe & Bar — a Japanese cafe that serves up pasta, sandwiches, and rice dishes that is hidden in a corner outside of the mall at the other side of the driveway away from the taxi stand. Remembered how I did enjoy their Mentaiko pasta quite some time back, as well as their signature Apple Pie which seemed to have been quite a thing back then — decided to go for their Ebikatsu and Egg Mayo Sandwich this time round for how I have had multiple pasta dishes over the week, and how I am very much into fried Ebi patties in sandwiches and burgers. Was pleasantly surprised with the execution of the sandwich; the bread of the sandwich comes well-toasted and came all crisp — slightly buttered for a light savoury note while the other elements such as the prawn cutlet, egg mayo, lettuce and tomato cones in between. The greens and tomatoes were pretty fresh, but the star that took the show was the Ebikatsu that came with chunks of prawn flesh without much use of fillers; the fried, golden brown exterior being all crisp and the entire patty did not feel particularly greasy. The egg mayo features diced hard boiled egg that came in consistently-sized cubes; makes for a good texture whilst not being too heavily doused with mayonnaise — sufficiently creamy without being particularly jelak. Shoestring fries were sufficiently crisp, though the fries were also admittedly a little over-seasoned with salt. Admittedly there seems to have been a change of ownership at Grand Jete Cafe & Bar; there has been substantive changes made to the layout, and the menu has also seen a revision (missed those illustrations that they have for the various items on their old menu) — there is now a section dedicated for light bites, while there are also a few collaborations with other merchants, including one with gelato from Denzy Gelato where the gelato is served with a Monaka Waffle that is exclusive to Grand Jete Cafe & Bar. A rather forgotten spot in the heart of Orchard Road that works great for a quiet meal away from the hustle and bustle of the malls.

Palatable Japanese-Western Fusion Dishes At Affordable Prices In The Heart Of Town [ Café Food Review — Did I finally find a replacement for P&W?? ;u; ] Starting the weekend by rinsing off my (honestly embarrassing) spell of mediocre culinary experiences with today’s gem: Grand Jeté Café at Taka! Those who’ve followed me from back in the probably know I used to live out of Patties & Wiches. But alas, the pandemic finally did them in, and I haven’t made any headway in finding a replacement…until now! For those wondering how they’d missed out on a new café opening in Taka, it’s because GJ isn’t new! It’s been there since 2017, but likely only accessible IF you know where it is. (Here’s a hint: It’s outside Tower B, to the left of the turn into Taka — not the main mall building) GJ specialises in Western-Japanese item, and does the full-works. By that, I mean they’ve tonkatsu, soba, curry, pastas, you name it, jazzed up with either Japanese or SEA influences. Honestly quite impressive given the size of the place. And the food is not that pricey either (it’s a good bit cheaper than P&W)! When we visited, it was one of those awkward 4pm-not-sure-if-lunch-or-linner kinda meals. I figured their signature Tonkatsu Sando was a safe bet for a between-meal snack, while a certain someone — who was so enamoured by their fried croquette on his last visit — decided to replicate his prev order. To help wash our fried items down, we got a side of kimchi — a little unorthodox for a café run by a Japanese lady — and a pot of lychee green tea (which was marvellously fragrant, but sadly no top-ups). Oh boy, the food was much better than I’d expected! Don’t be fooled by the deceptive size of my ‘wich — it filled me up quick! The katsu was lean yet juicy, and was encrusted in crust that had an almost biscuit-like texture to it, which paired really nicely with the blooms of cabbage shreds, and did not overwhelm the thin bread slices. Their croquette was where their frying technique really shone. Clad in vibrant orange, these nuggets were delicate and dry on the outside, and revealed a languid pool of pale gold within. I’m not one for croquette, but my goodness, if this is what all those anime protags have been munchin’ on, no wonder they always look so smitten!

Pulled Pork Sandwich $8.90 Eat this fast or else your bread gets soggy from the pulled pork fillings. I like the pickles as it went well with the flavourful pulled pork!

Caramel Grilled Chicken Sandwich $8.90 My favourite sandwich of all time. Although it was quite salty, the chicken was tender and the egg was soft and nice. Love the soft bread texture too!

Grilled Cheese $5.90 While the cheese was hot and stretchy, it wasn't very flavorful. Bread tasted stale and not as buttery as I'd have liked!

Chicken rice bowl Bought the 1 for 1 set meal on burpple! Worth it and value for money. Good portion size and filling as well. Will definitely patronise again!

Doco rice bowls Had the beef and the shroom curry bowl Love the curry and mushroom. Good choice for vegetarian friends. Portion size is very substantial. The miso soup also a good pairing with the rice.

Original Tonkatsu Yummy, creamy bowl of umami goodness. However it’s very rich and can foresee that it may get a bit jelak toward the end without any spice/garlic to cut through the porkiness

Black king My fav - still drool thinking about it. Garlicky with squid ink. Tastes a bit like black pepper crab. Not sure whether they put MSG haha (probably)

Red King Love that the ramen here is customisable. Red king had a nice spicy kick. Iirc need to top up for the onsen egg

Al ragu pappardelle ($25.80) - Al dente pasta, sauce was quite tasty but the depth of meaty flavour was absent. - Some parts of the beef chunks were a little tough and contained small amounts of tendon 🥩 [5/10]

Carbonara roma linguine ($26.80) - Having “pasta” in the restaurant name, it’s a shame the pasta was undercooked and hard. - Presentation was rather plain with only pasta and pancetta. - Sauce lacked in flavour and seasoning, even Pastamania can do better 🥲 [2/10]

Calamari fritto spaghetti ($26.80) - Interesting combi, calamari was crispy and chewy! - Tanginess of lemon butter sauce was barely present, could have stronger savouriness. [6/10]

Curry Rice Located at the 4th floor of Fortune Centre, you would find this vegetarian restaurant right as you take the escalator up. Consider a much quieter place as the rest, but here all their items on the menu are organic foods. So the price could be more higher than the rest. Gotten their curry rice which comes with veggies, salad and mocked meat in curry sauce. The curry is actually very spicy. Soup available for additional $1.

Thunder Tea Brown Rice Have to admit I'm not a big lei cha fan, but this I kinda liked. As you can see, the paleness of the tea soup suggests how mild its vegetal/herbal taste is, which is probably why I didn't mind the nuttier-than-usual concoction.

Chicken Protein Bowl A restaurant focusing on healthy food, gotten their chicken protein bowl during lunch time and was truly disappointed. Even though it was generous size with all the vege but it was too dry for me, especially the chicken given was so hard to chew. Not only this, the price also consider very expensive. You could probably get a better and cheaper in other place.

For Nutrient-Packed Veggie Bowls This cosy bistro on the corner of Stanley Street serves up hearty veggie bowls (they call them Buddha bowls) that are far from boring. Peanut Butter Fudge 4+(svc When Dining In) Yes it does Melt even when u just hold it in your hands, but that's all the redeeming points. Not sweet at all, and the peanut taste is almost non-existent, just taste the oiliness of the "butter". Neither was the dark chocolate very enticing. They were balanced but not in the good way, felt like one flavour shld have taken a back seat. Maybe a little mean to put this into this category, but honestly im not a Fan of gluten free food in the first place

3 Cup Chicken Rice Set ($10.90) Refreshing and healthy meal. Soy based mock chicken, capsicum in an authentic braised sauce. Perfectly steamed and salted veggies on the side.

Nyonya Laksa Lemak The servings, or at least the crockery, at this vegetarian restaurant are huge! That slightly made up for the inflated prices. Nothing to complain about the laksa, yet also nothing special. It's like standard laksa, vegetarian or not.

heard a lot about it but found it q underwhelming🫠 the soup could have been richer and nuttier! i got the thunder tea beehoon ($5.30 - regular) and as much as i prefer noodles>rice, i think i still prefer rice for my leicha as it soaks up the soup better. but i do like that this didn’t feel oily!

Thunder Tea Rice A healthier choice in the hawker centre, serving thunder tea in rice or noodle option. For the regular size you already get a decent portion.

Lei Cha with Brown Rice ($6.30) This had a short queue at ~6.30pm on a Saturday. Had seen some raving reviews of this but sadly we didn’t really find it very impressive. There’s long beans, red beans (I don’t usually see this in leicha!), tofu, peanuts, long beans, cabbage and some other veg. Some of the tofu was very tasty, as it was soft with a bite to it; but some of the smaller pieces weren’t as nice. Peanuts were crunchy, the rest of the ingredients were decent, nothing much to say. On first taste, I found the bowl quite meh, but I found it better towards the end. It’s very clean tasting, it’s definitely a good choice for those on a diet. But it tasted a bit flat? Compared to other leichas I’ve had. Maybe adding mani cai would help? The soup has a palatable level of bitterness so it was easy to drink. Overall, I’ve had better leicha at other places, but I hear lots of people love this so this might be to your preference!
