藤椒串串 Skewers [Price Varies] First had 串串 in Guangzhou last year and have been hoping to have them again, so I was super excited to see this new stall up in the food area just outside People’s Park Complex (aka where you find all sorts of China Chinese dishes). The skewers at Happy Cat are $1 for each meat skewer and $1.50 for every 2 vegetable skewers. Grab a cup, pick the skewers you want and the servers will help to dip them into a spicy sauce. Most skewers I had in Guangzhou gave an option of a hot or cold dip, but this was only available cold. However, while I liked the freshness of the ingredients and the ‘numbness’ of the spicy dip, thought the dip could be a lot more fragrant and I would have preferred lesser sesame sauce in the mix. 📍快乐猫 Happy Cat People's Park Complex (Outdoor Food Area) 1 Park Road

Vegetables (2 Sticks For $1.50), Meat (1 Stick For $1). Loved the Taiwanese sausages, the crisp sliced lotus roots and potatoes! Good addictive mala sauce that is Super numbing. Best if could customise the level of spiciness but there is only one flavour and level of spiciness now.

Still remember when they first did their soft launch at their original location along Upper Thomson road, we were fascinated by their concept and food. It used to be a self-help concept to select from their wide variety of items, and a 1-time serving of their infamous steamed (kukus) coconut rice of any amount. We loved their variety which tasted good, especially the rice which was significantly fragrant and well-cooked. Never visited them since they relocated from 2nd to now, their 3rd venue. Was disappointed that they’re operating like just another stall, with set meal and limited options for top-up. They have lost the touch in their steamed rice. Fried chicken wing and fish were crispy but just decent. Notably, the mutton Rendang was delicious, but it wasn’t going to be enough to draw us back again to the ulu location in the industrial area. Really a shame b’cos we used to remember them for their brighter days.

Nasi lemak. 🍴 . When my bro and SIL was back in town, they craved Nasi lemak and I thought of trying Nasi lemak kukus that I’ve always wanted to. However they are no longer along selegie, but in Toa Payoh industrial estate 1002 now. I googled again and again before going down to make sure it was right. 🍴 . The Nasi lemak was quite the bomb! $4 for a set with a choice of salted egg wings/ normal. Though it was a pity that the salted egg was oos when I was there. Normal wings batter was pretty legit though. Rice is actually steamed rather than cooked to retain the coconut milk aroma! There’s coconut milk aroma all the way to the last bite. The sambal was amazing that we had to get extras. 🍴 . And while you are at it, definitely order the fried chicken skin at a dollar. You will not regret it. 🍴 . If you have heard of this place and read that there’s free flow coconut rice and two kinds of sambal chilli (one that’s spicy and another that’s slightly sweeter), your eyes are definitely not playing tricks with you. Yes, there’s really FREE FLOW rice and sambal chilli, which are two essentials in what sets a great nasi lemak apart from a mediocre one. They definitely didn’t scrimp on the coconut rice and sambal chilli as the fragrance from the coconut rice cooked in pandan leaves will instantly hit you as you open the rice cooker while the spicy sambal chilli might seemed unassuming initially but wait for 5 minutes and the spiciness will slowly reveal its fiery nature and cause a slow burn around your lips. • Don’t come here and expect a wide array of ingredients because there’s not; but I feel the variety is more than enough for one to customize their own plate of nasi lemak. Right at the counter, the shop owners have laid out everything from the regular ikan bilis with peanut, hotdogs, otah to the less unconventional ones like fried chicken skin. Flavours will not knock you off the perch but it’s the familiarity and distinctive homecooked taste that will make you keep going back for more. Delicious food, great drinks and lovely ambience! One of my favourite bars with delicious and decently priced food!! A must try would be the Hatten Cheese ($8) this cheese fishcake dish is simple yet mindblowing - love the drinks here as well especially the umeshu ($8), very lovely ambience and perfect for date nights!

Mentaiko Udon With Kimchi It’s quite a find for this japanese izakaya place along the whole stretch of boat quay! Very chill ambiance with super goood izakaya variety and they have rather reasonable priced sake on promotions. One of my favorite was this mentaiko udon with kimchi, simple but very light and refreshing, could just easily slurp the whole bowl down. Other than that must try their battered squid too! It’s amazingly good!

the KFC Legend For $2.50 a chunk, it may seem overpriced. But the way they prepared it (24h marination) allowed the flavours to seep into all of the meat & skin. It simply slides off the bone. Called KFC (katanashi fried chicken), it may trump the original one. Also, A+ for service, value and views here

Shack Stack & Bacon Cheese Fries While everyone’s clamouring for Shake Shack at Jewel Changi Airport, I found myself in another (albeit shorter and faster-moving) queue in SS’s motherland New York. I got these items to go, but at 5pm, there was still a pretty long queue and the whole restaurant was crowded with people waiting for their orders. You get a buzzer to collect your food, and the staff are all in a hurry to get things done with regular reminders of “Kitchen, time is money!” abound every few minutes. After trying their signature items, I can see why they’re so popular. The Shack Stack comes with both the regular beef patty as well as the mushroom patty. The breaded mushroom patty has a layer of cheese in it, and it’s amazing when it’s all hot and gooey. The beef patty is also very tender and moist. The burger is amazing if you eat it while it’s hot, so make sure you dig in within 15 minutes or else it’ll cool down and the cheese hardens. I requested for the cheese to be packed separately, so I also tried the fries on their own before slathering them in cheese and bacon. The hot fries were super crispy and not too salty. One thing’s for sure - the Americans sure know how to make their fries taste damn good. The cheese sauce also hardens after a few minutes, so you really gotta enjoy all this while it’s hot. Personally I feel the bacon made the cheese fries too salty, so if I went back to Shake Shack, I’d just order the regular fries. Overall, Shake Shack makes some good burgers, but after trying In-N-Out in Los Angeles, I don’t think they quite match up. I would revisit Shake Shack if there was no queue, but I definitely won’t be queueing for more than half an hour at Jewel for this.

Bacon Double Cheeseburger (US$10.66 = S$14.80). I finally had the chance to try this when I was in New York! This isn't just any fast food, it's a really good burger with a very nice taste of beef - moist sweet and fragrant, sandwiched between fluffy bun and melty savory cheese. Mine had double patty and bacon which was crispy. 🔸 I find the burger better than those in many restaurants. And better still, Shake Shack is found at many prominent locations. Good, cheap and convenient 😋
