Stir fried beef with garlic chives Whilst the focus is (rightfully) on Hong Kong Star's fish dishes, you should definitely not miss out on their stir fried beef with garlic chives. I was craving for beef one night and decided to try out this unassuming dish. The beef was juicy and tender and stir fried in a sweet savoury garlicky sauce. Paired with the equally pungent garlic chives, this dish is an excellent rice thief that will leave you craving for more. Needless to say, I have been back for more several times since!

Stir fried vegetables with tofu Miss K always scolds me for not eating my veggies because I always find it expensive to pay for a plate of veggies when I could have a more satisfying plate of meats! HK Star's portions are as usual generous so I will close one eye in this case! Their tofu reminds me more of tau kwa in terms of texture and the dish feels 'healthy' because it is lightly seasoned to allow you to taste each individual ingredient.

Steamed grouper fish We were back (and tbh on multiple occasions since) at Hong Kong Star Zi Char to check out some of their other dishes. For $20 to $30 (depending on its size), you yet a good sized fresh grouper fish. The fish is delicately steamed to perfection upon order - moist, flaky and tender. You can tell the fish is fresh because the meat is buttery sweet and there is no muddy or 'fishy' aftertaste. I like it that HK Star uses a lighter and subtly sweet soy sauce base to accompany their steam fish. It is great over rice and alright even if you 'drink' it up by the spoonful. I find that most eateries tend to use heavier tasting soy sauces either to cover the 'fishy' odours of the fish or to make it more 'flavourful'. To be honest, I think HK Star's lighter touch is better as it allows the natural flavours of the fish to shine through instead of overpowering it. Hk Star also serves other fishes but they are often snapped up fast. So remember, the early bird catches the fish!

Mee Bakso From Ole-Ole Javiyan $4.50 a bowl of classic mee bakso. Yummy!

Hokkien Mee Thin beehoon and yellow mee was used here, and I liked the different textures! The broth is also quite tasty. I would think that this is an above average hokkien mee stall, but not the *best* (golden mile’s remains the best).

Steamed Rice Flour From Aziza Putu Piring Durian $2.70 a portion. Individually handcrafted. Yummy!

Char Kwey Teow Michelin worthy char kway teow From char kway teow , oyster omelette and carrot cake stall Sorry - but this stall’s name is exactly as such . No special name , no fan fare no newspaper article .... But this is exactly how a good char kway teow should be . The regulars will know this stall but unsuspecting visitors to the Hawker won’t think much of this stall because if it’s generic stall name . The wok hei is evident and the moisture is just nice without being too oily or too dry . The best part is - this is not too sickeningly sweet and lends towards the Savory side . Higher quality fish cakes and a better quality of kwey Teow and a good stock gives this plate of local delicacy a 10/10 from me . Not forgetting the uncle who cooks with so much passion . We only order when the “ right” elderly Uncle is on shift . Typically Saturday evenings . Hahhahaha. Too precious to not count your calories for this calorific dish .

The OG Thai food restaurant that I used to patronise very frequently in the past during my schooling days until a few others popped up in the Golden Mile Complex which offer a different variety of food. Coming back to Na Na and after having their Tom Yum Seafood Soup again lit up my palate and brought back fond memories. The spiciness and tanginess of each slurp is enough to convince me that their standards have been maintained after all these years, including the Basil Pork which brings a mountain of heat from each bite. Basil Crispy Pork I wished so hard it's French beans, but it's long beans, which meant I wouldn't touch it. Nothing special about the pork belly and certainly not "crispy". Sauce, albeit little, was quite umami.

Pineapple Fried Rice This hit all the marks for pineapple rice - and more. Buried beneath were big pieces of sotong, prawn and crabmeat. Quite a substantial plate too.

Yong Tau Foo The food centre has reopen recently after they closed for a few months for renovation. So this time I’m back to this place to grab my lunch from this yong tau foo stall called the 梅記釀豆腐. No English name written on their signage, except the Chinese words. Pick all the ingredients you like, whether you prefer a dry or soup version, then choose your noodles type. I would say avoid getting their yellow noodles, as the noodle acidic taste was very strong. So I have to mix it with lots of chili and soy sauce to cover it.

Fried Kway Teow Kim Huat Fried Kway Teow stall is where you can grab a plate of fried kway teow that fried by the uncle. Lots of ingredients such as the sausage if you went for the big portion.

Fishball Kway Teow Noodle Soup Xiang Kee Yu Yuan Mian Tang is one of the stall that usually attracts queue during lunch time. The alternative noodle stall where the rest not open. I went for their fishball kway teow noodle soup. Comes with fishballs, minced meat, mushroom, pork lard and pork liver. Wonderful bowl of soup with all the ingredients.

Mutton Keema / Keema Matar (SGD $4) @ Azmi Restaurant. Established in November 2006, this stall is widely known for their signature dishes of chapati and mutton keema. . Freshly made daily, their rendition is more stew than curry, with chunks of minced mutton, peas, diced potatoes, in a thin yet robust spiced gravy. Chapati with Mutton Keema Where to find the best chapati in Singapore, and many reviews would lead you to this place at one of the corner shop along Serangoon Road in Little India. All the chapatis are freshly made here and served warm. Most people would recommend you to pair your chapati with their mutton keema gravy. Mutton keema is basically a mix of minced mutton, potatoes green peas in masala curry. So you just need to pinch a piece from your chapati and dip into it. It is spicy but not too much, and you could taste the sweetish from the potato and green peas.

Duck strips fried rice w preserved veg 24++(used BB) The duck strips have some bite, which works well for the fried rice. This is clearly a well conceived dish, the umami is light but sufficient. The crunch from the asparagus and preserved veggies worked beautifully Execution was good too. Rice grains were well separated and have good bite. A very good fried rice

Seafood duck Pao fan 42++ Theirs uses pig bone and duck broth, very thick and pretty good. Duck was fine and prawns, scallops were both bouncy. Only problem was that it was served incredibly hot. Otherwise it's a good rendition. Also I'm happy to find out that my duck porridge is still superior lol

Pineapple 🍍 fried rice As authentic as it looks - served right in a pineapple with tender chicken chunks and pineapple slices within. Every grain was light, fluffy. I love the generous portion of pork floss that came with the pineapple rice. It rekindled the lost love (& craving!) for pork floss. ‘Definitely one of the best dishes here. Oh, and it’s part of the daily set lunch menu @ $10.90++, comes with a dessert! Ours was coconut ice cream that day! 😋

🌴 Coconut 🥥 ice cream This was my dessert as part of the daily set lunch. It’s definitely slightly more than a scoop of coconut ice cream. x1.5 of the regular scoop I believe? For coconut lovers, this completes your Thai experience! Without being overly coconut-y nor jelat, it’s the perfect sweet ending to your meal!

🦐 Pad Thai This does not look as delicious, grand, nor instagrammable as compared to the pineapple fried rice counterpart but the pad Thai was actually what I returned a 2nd time for! (I had the beef pad thai on my first visit and had really loved it!). I conclude the beef pad Thai tasted better - there’s additional ‘sauce/gravy’ from the stir-fried beef that accentuated the flavours. Prawns were fresh and boiing-boiinngg but as a prawn pad thai, it wasn’t “wow”! I’ll return again, but no longer for the pad thai anymore! 🍍 fried rice stole my tastebuds in this second visit 😋
