For Comforting Udon The lucky folks of Taman Desa get to enjoy udon for less than RM10 at this neighbourhood joint. A crowd-favourite is the House Special (RM6.50), where hot or cold udon sits in a delicious soy broth, topped with a runny egg and scallions. For more flavour oomph, throw in a dash of togarashi. Make it a fuller meal with yummy kushiage – the Sweet Potato (RM2.50) and Prawn (RM3.50) are must-orders.

Kakiage (RM3.50) What a steal for the price you’re paying. Not oily, crispy and super flavourful – possible one of the better ones in town. I liked dipping it into the mustard and plum sauce for more flavour oomph!

Eggplant (RM2.50) & Prawn (RM3.50) Kushiage As all udons here are meat-free, would definitely recommend ordering some skewers on the side. Both were great! Love the mustard and plum sauce dip given too.

Crispy Parmesan Cauliflower (RM22) This starter sealed the deal for me! Battered up cauliflower is deep-fried for crispy, cheesy stalks peppered with parmiagiana reggiano, on dill yoghurt sauce. The combination of salty, tangy and oh so crispy cauliflower is sublime and incredibly addictive too. Brownie points for the good, sizeable sharing portions!

Hummus 3 Ways (RM28) Hummus done three ways: with chickpea, beetroot and sweet potato, and all delicious in their own rights. The serving of bread it comes with is a little sad, but it’s only RM8 to get more bread so take heart. It was plenty satisfying to gobble up that hummus on its own, especially that Indian-spiced sweet potato one!

Italian Lamb Meatball Sub (RM32; Slashed to RM24 for lunch) Value for money lunchtime! Two Hands does an excellent meatball sub, stuffed with three large yummy lamb meatballs with good bite. The sauce hits you with a little bit of heat at the back of your tongue, but of the very bearable and enjoyable sort. Would’ve liked the bun a little warmer and fluffier, but overall no complains! Also adore the abundance of sweet potato fries with mayo on the side.

Mango Kerabu Malaysian salad features young mango, beansprout with crispy anchovies, lemongrass, roasted shallots and kaffir lime leaves. Love the tanginess and refreshing appetiser that opens up our palates for the next course. RM27 per serving.

For Late Night Bowls and Yakitori For after-work dinner and drinks with the gang, look to this Japanese izakaya in Taman Desa for yakitori and rice bowls. Ps. Look out for a white signboard with kanji (Japanese characters) on it. Burppler Carmen Chan enjoyed pairing skewers with the Minced Meat Egg Rice (RM15) that's a guaranteed tummy-filler. Egg lovers, get the Egg Rice (RM7), which sees a simple yet spectacular combo of raw egg, seaweed and bonito flakes on warm, slightly sticky Jap rice. Take Burppler's R D's advice and add a dash of soy for more flavour! Wash it all down with a cup of the house drink, Maruhi Sour (RM16). Photo by Burppler R D

Yakitori (from RM6) One of my favourite spots for yakitori and rice bowls. Super laidback, affordable and everything is always cooked well. Must have the chicken skin, tomatoes and egg rice bowl!

Porky Toast Modernised home cooked food, prolly inspired by mama/grandma’s cooking. Decent pricing and Waiter took time to walk through the menu. Awesome service!

Pork Toast (RM6 for 2; RM12 for 4) My only regret was not having enough tummy space to fit four of these scrumptious babies in me. It was so sinfully-delicious; a flavourful pork patty sandwiched between two thin slices of bread and pan fried (?) till an even colour is achieved, then drizzled with chilli mayo! Do yourself a favour and get this as a side. You may be too full to talk properly after the meal but it’s worth it!

Homemade Spam Sandwich The secret to this mouthwatering, lip-smacking, dopamine-inducing dish is.. the fluffy milk bread and the juicy (not to mention THICC) spam. Doesn’t look like it’s a filling dish, but trust me, the meaty spam is enough to fill you up. But if you’re brave and if you’re dying for another plate of these babies, go ahead and order another one for yourself. It’s worth it.

Love the ambience n food here, hence my second visit to @nipporicafe , Empire Damansara. Dinner menu: unagi set RM65 with sashimi and chawamushi. There’s a small pot of green tea which is supposed to pour it onto the rice. Tried it but I preferred my rice to be just rice ... . . A La Carte: garlic rice RM12, and chicken with home made sauce RM28 (we ordered teriyaki chicken however a different dish came, though we are ok with it. Then, they served teriyaki chicken :) good service and happy customer!)

Tofu with minced chicken bondori: RM28. At first I thought both tofu and minced chicken are separated but it was not. The appearance is better than the taste though. Prefer chicken karaage/ fish lunch set here, which serves along with miso soup. . . Will come back to try out their dinner set soon! . . What I love: A quiet and peaceful hideout with friends , enjoying ourselves with good food! . . Located next to Haraju Cube, Empire Damansara.

Japanese Comfort Food Love the vibes here! Maybe it’s the tatami or how everything comes in small little plates/bowls of its own, but something makes this place feel like home. The signature dishes include their tofu with minced chicken donburi (as pictured) and the mentai udon. Great food! But be prepared to pay quite a bit.

Bisi Bele Bhath (RM9) Thinking of this as an Indian risotto. The rice is is soft yet chewy and is cooked in a delicious spicy tomato sauce, filled with lentils and vegetables. Use the mini papadom to scoop up the rice for the best way to eat it. Perfect for rainy nights.

Masala Dosa (RM12) Could this be the best thosai in town? Possibly! Amazing how they nail the crispy-on-the-outside and soft-on-the-inside texture all the time. It’s already delicious on its own but when you fold the potatoes (stuffed in the thosai) with it, it’s heaven.

Set Mini Me This is a thali set. Lots of dishes given. You can choose whether to have thosai/poori/chapathi/akki roti to go with it. It consists if kosambari salad, palya, vegetable sagu, bidi belt bhath, plain rice, curd rice, sambar, rasam, papad, pickles, payasam and ghulab jamun. This is RM18.

For Asian Flavours and Natural Wine Great for dinner with your bestie is this hip restaurant in Jalan Batai. Have a glass of Natural Wine (from RM30 a glass) to pair with the Unagi Cracker (RM24). Look forward to tender pieces of grilled unagi and crunchy granny smith apples sandwiched between dehydrated seaweed — interesting and delicious! The community also recommends the Ramen Noodle XO Sauce (RM16) and the Meat Bun (RM21) stuffed with soy-braised lamb. Photo by Burppler Jesuis Enamourez

For a Weekday Rice Bowl Fix Drop by this modern Asian restaurant in Plaza Batai for weekday express lunches over mean rice bowls with stellar protein options – from tender beef to torched unagi, seared ginger salmon and more. Dive straight for the Beef With Seaweed Butter (RM27) and look forward to medium-rare slices of quality beef on seaweed butter rice, served with pickles and fresh veggies. Also good is the Japanese Fried Chicken (RM25) – deep-fried karaage in a creamy butter sauce. Ps. All lunch bowls come with a glass of ice tea.

Japanese Fried Chicken (RM25) Must-order for the chicken lovers. Super crunchy chicken slicked in a butter sauce with curry leaves, served with the same sides as the beef bowl – jammy egg, pickles, charred kailan, edamame and raw purple cabbage. Very satisfying.

An exploration of Malaysia's diverse cuisines...each state gets representation on the menu. The winged beans tossed in budu (fermented fish sauce native of Terengganu) aïoli and crispy shallots, the second photo of the carousel, is easily the winner of the lot. You beta not miss coming here, I tell you hor. Ok, that's all.

Best Dark Choc Soufflé in KL It doesn't matter if it's for lunch or dinner, the dark choc soufflé here is a must order. Perfect crusty top, warm moist interior, and velvety dark choc liquid at the centre, the dark choc soufflé (RM40) is amazing. The soufflé is decadently dark as it uses 70% single origin Pahang choc with choc ice-cream on the side. Mmm... 😋🍫 this is our absolute favourite soufflé in town! Highly recommended!
