Glazed Miso Eggplant Delicious appetiser

Crispy Eggplant, Homemade Flat Bread With Labneh & Duck I think they’ve taken the duck off the menu; it was cooked nicely and quite tender. The flatbread was my favourite, as this was pretty tasty and delicious with the creamy labneh. The crispy eggplant was okay, but the batter could have been lighter!

Halloumi to me, is a fabulous ingredient to feature in salads; which is why I almost always have it if it turns up on a menu. This Halloumi & Squash ($16) number comes with sweet pickled beets, collard greens, almond flakes, and a nutty burnt butter dressing. Sounds fabulous, but unfortunately the seasonings were a wee off and it turned out a little meh. The squash for one, though well roasted, was completely unseasoned. Would’ve been fine if the burnt butter dressing had a touch of salt, but there was also way much of that sweet pickling juice added in which tipped the whole salad onto the sweeter side without good balance. They were also too heavy-handed with the dressing, leaving me eating basically greasy vegetables sitting in melted butter. The biggest disappointment however has to be the halloumi: the semi-hard cheese was fried to the point of being just crazy tough. Honestly if they’d just refine each component and pay a little more attention, this could be a fabulous salad.

mt fuji nabe this was part of their lunch menu available on weekdays from 11.30am-5pm. i got the beef (need to top up a bit but i can’t rmb how much) which was a biiiiit tough but still enjoyable. soup is refillable which is great but it was a bit hard to get the staff’s attention (they were helpful once they actually saw me though!) lots of veg, esp bean sprouts. overall a decent choice if you want something soupy and comforting would come back again!

Unatama Don | $18.90 Grilled eel with egg and onions on rice. Grilled eel was surprisingly not too and as it was slightly charred, while the egg had so much flavour to it. This was very hearty to consume and maybe unagi could have been slightly bigger.

Ebikatsu & Egg Mayo Headed down to Takashimaya for some shopping because things just kept breaking of the late — was more of just looking for a quiet spot that I don’t have to jostle with the crowds to dine at since I was hungry and didn’t really want to do all the shopping before I had my dinner. Got reminded of Grand Jete Cafe & Bar — a Japanese cafe that serves up pasta, sandwiches, and rice dishes that is hidden in a corner outside of the mall at the other side of the driveway away from the taxi stand. Remembered how I did enjoy their Mentaiko pasta quite some time back, as well as their signature Apple Pie which seemed to have been quite a thing back then — decided to go for their Ebikatsu and Egg Mayo Sandwich this time round for how I have had multiple pasta dishes over the week, and how I am very much into fried Ebi patties in sandwiches and burgers. Was pleasantly surprised with the execution of the sandwich; the bread of the sandwich comes well-toasted and came all crisp — slightly buttered for a light savoury note while the other elements such as the prawn cutlet, egg mayo, lettuce and tomato cones in between. The greens and tomatoes were pretty fresh, but the star that took the show was the Ebikatsu that came with chunks of prawn flesh without much use of fillers; the fried, golden brown exterior being all crisp and the entire patty did not feel particularly greasy. The egg mayo features diced hard boiled egg that came in consistently-sized cubes; makes for a good texture whilst not being too heavily doused with mayonnaise — sufficiently creamy without being particularly jelak. Shoestring fries were sufficiently crisp, though the fries were also admittedly a little over-seasoned with salt. Admittedly there seems to have been a change of ownership at Grand Jete Cafe & Bar; there has been substantive changes made to the layout, and the menu has also seen a revision (missed those illustrations that they have for the various items on their old menu) — there is now a section dedicated for light bites, while there are also a few collaborations with other merchants, including one with gelato from Denzy Gelato where the gelato is served with a Monaka Waffle that is exclusive to Grand Jete Cafe & Bar. A rather forgotten spot in the heart of Orchard Road that works great for a quiet meal away from the hustle and bustle of the malls.

Palatable Japanese-Western Fusion Dishes At Affordable Prices In The Heart Of Town [ Café Food Review — Did I finally find a replacement for P&W?? ;u; ] Starting the weekend by rinsing off my (honestly embarrassing) spell of mediocre culinary experiences with today’s gem: Grand Jeté Café at Taka! Those who’ve followed me from back in the probably know I used to live out of Patties & Wiches. But alas, the pandemic finally did them in, and I haven’t made any headway in finding a replacement…until now! For those wondering how they’d missed out on a new café opening in Taka, it’s because GJ isn’t new! It’s been there since 2017, but likely only accessible IF you know where it is. (Here’s a hint: It’s outside Tower B, to the left of the turn into Taka — not the main mall building) GJ specialises in Western-Japanese item, and does the full-works. By that, I mean they’ve tonkatsu, soba, curry, pastas, you name it, jazzed up with either Japanese or SEA influences. Honestly quite impressive given the size of the place. And the food is not that pricey either (it’s a good bit cheaper than P&W)! When we visited, it was one of those awkward 4pm-not-sure-if-lunch-or-linner kinda meals. I figured their signature Tonkatsu Sando was a safe bet for a between-meal snack, while a certain someone — who was so enamoured by their fried croquette on his last visit — decided to replicate his prev order. To help wash our fried items down, we got a side of kimchi — a little unorthodox for a café run by a Japanese lady — and a pot of lychee green tea (which was marvellously fragrant, but sadly no top-ups). Oh boy, the food was much better than I’d expected! Don’t be fooled by the deceptive size of my ‘wich — it filled me up quick! The katsu was lean yet juicy, and was encrusted in crust that had an almost biscuit-like texture to it, which paired really nicely with the blooms of cabbage shreds, and did not overwhelm the thin bread slices. Their croquette was where their frying technique really shone. Clad in vibrant orange, these nuggets were delicate and dry on the outside, and revealed a languid pool of pale gold within. I’m not one for croquette, but my goodness, if this is what all those anime protags have been munchin’ on, no wonder they always look so smitten!

Falafel Burger Came with the girlfriend for Wednesday date night, armed with Burpple Beyond's 1 for 1. She had the Angus Burger while I took the vegetarian option. The Falafel Burger was delicious, with the hummus sauce complementing the patty well. It also came with a hefty serving of fries. Would definitely be back!

Unfortunately, both of these fell short of expectations with the flavours executed quite oddly. The sourness was overpowering for both dessert, & they were served way too hard for it to be enjoyed conveniently. However, if you think about this deal as a 3-course (omitting the dessert) 1-for-1 deal, some might see it as not too shabby. The selected place for the night got everyone’s approval which made me satisfied. To share we had the wagyu cote de boeuf and this was a meat feast fit for a king or was it Dad? Medium cut with enough tendon, fat and red protein. The French bean side was slightly too tough with an old skin, but thankfully we ordered the beetroot tartare which was a nice interlude to the 1.1kg star of the night. For my main I had the quinoa falafel which was a great take on the usual fried chickpea & beans “meatballs”. I also adored the bed of hummus together with cabbage and pomegranate. Artemis is now on my “go to places for occasions” list.

Roasted Salmon Located at the heart of the CBD on level 40 of Capitagreen Building, you can get a panoramic view of the Singapore skyline while enjoying the wonderful Mediterranean inspired food. One of the standouts was the perfectly roasted salmon atop a bed of couscous, eggplant and tomato relish ($36). The salmon was perfectly cooked with a nice crispy skin. I also liked the combination of flavours of the turmeric, saffron and tomato that go really well with the couscous.

The Last Hurrah! (Sit down Buffet style at $39++) This, including the cornbread waffles, were my top favourites among the wide spread served at the restaurant during their last weekend (24/11–26/11). The individual components of the Wagyu Big Mac Fried Rice were simple and unassuming, but together, they constructed the most comforting of rice bowls. The beef itself was a little dry, but the rest of the ingredients were well done. The flavour combination was amazing, and it all felt like a warm hug. The cornbread waffles were something else too. I love cornbread in general but the ones here still blew my mind–I happily had 5 of those goodies. I usually favour crispier waffles, but I didn't mind these at all because they were delightfully fluffy. Beside them being sweet like typical cornbreads I've had, pairing them with the maple syrup enhanced the flavour further and actually brought out a wonderful smokiness in it. There were bits of corn kernels inside too, which I was only too happy to lap up. Beautiful flavours and texture checked, making these a plate (or in my case, 2 plates) of memorable waffles. So with these, I bid farewell to Bird Bird with a heavy heart. I've never been a fried chicken fan, but these outstanding menu items proved that the restaurant can delight everyone else too! I certainly hope this is not the last we've seen of Bjorn and his amazing team (other than Artichoke, of course) for this experience has further affirmed my belief that they can execute some great stuff.

thai-inspired burgers. here at bird bird for the collaboration with three buns. the burger of the day is the bird bun ($16), a fried chicken thigh paired with nam jim slaw and coconut mayo, sandwiched by rice buns. the taste of the burger is undoubtedly thai-inspired, with its sour and spicy slaw (nam jim = dipping sauce in thai) and the juicy chicken thigh that had a slight lemongrass kick to it. the coconut mayo conjured images of the sea and coconut trees swaying in the breeze - well actually it reminded me of the nasi lemak burger from mcdonald’s. finally, the rice buns bravely soaked up all the juices from the chicken and the slaw while keeping its shape and texture. toasted (oat?) flakes on the top bun added crunch as well. pity it’s so far from home (and also a limited time collab). hoping it will pop up again sometime soon 😬

Wagyu Big Mac Fried Rice 🐮🍚 This seems to be a rice version of the wagyu beef burger that we usually have in other cafés and burger joints. Served with a 'special' sauce which enhanced the flavour. As instructed by the staff, put the sauce first and then, all ingredients should be mixed together. As a result, a feast of variety of interesting flavours in a plate! Although, the beef was quite chewy and this serving is a bit pricey, generally, I enjoyed this meal. PS The wagyu beef are under the fried egg. Sorry. Too hungry, I didn't realise that the beef slices can't be seen! ☹️ #burpple

Pork Skewers Pork skewers met expectations. The meat is well marinated and tender but it has quite an overpowering pork smell.

Thai Omelette I love a good Thai Omelette but unfortunately, this dish disappoints. The omelette was not fluffy and the texture is kind of flat and dry. Doesn't bring out the sweetness of the egg.

Small Beef Noodles Bowl Tried both their Tom yum and beef noodle bowls at $1.90 each. The noodles were quite hard instead of Al dente. The soup is alright but nothing much to wow about. The restaurant was completely empty on a Tuesday night at 8pm. Not likely to visit again :(

For Casual Modern Australian Fare on Beach Road Opened by the folks behind Cicheti, this casual bistro in South Beach is ideal for meals with loved ones (furkids included). Order their creamy and crispy Mushroom Gnocchi ($23), a side of crunchy Caramelised Brussel Sprouts ($10) and sous-vide Pollo with Couscous ($26) for a hearty meal. Sticky Pork Belly ($25) First time at Fynn’s and didn’t expect to see this Thai inspired dish on the brunch menu. You’ve got this funky pork belly slabs on a bed of glass noods, crispy rice crackers, sprouts and coriander. Toss it all up in that umami packed nam jim sauce and it’s just super delishhhh!

Fynns by Chicheti A casual bistro that serves up decent dishes with great service and wont break your wallet. From top to bottom we had mushroom gnocchi $23 caramelised brussel sprouts(yummy!) $10 and pollo with couscous $26 Gnocchi was crispy on the outside and creamy like inside which i found delicious and the sousvide chicken was cooked to near perfection. The game changer was the brussel sprouts which were crunchy with the right amount of sweet and tangy. Ended our meal with their banana bread and coffee Total damage $87.. worthy even without a deal
