My craving and search for good salted egg yolk chicken brought me here. It comes with white rice and the option of a fried egg. Fried chicken bites drenched with savoury sweet salted egg yolk sauce. One of the good ones i've had!
It was my first time to Mrs Pho and had one of my favourite Vietnamese dishes, dry vermicellli salad with grilled pork, pork balls and fried spring roll, a separate sweet sour salty sauce was served for you to pour over and mix it all together. I asked for extra basil leafs as i really like it. Very good, if only the grilled pork were not too sweet for my liking it would had been perfect!
The cockles with garlic sauce had really nice sauce, recommended!!
Whenever i visit an area or a country, i always try and savour the local food. Even more, when I am on a culinary trip, obviously! Even in Minangkabau/West Sumatra (where Padang is located) itself, there are different kind of cuisine with different types of dishes, ingredients, styles of cooking and flavours. .
One typical Minangkabau dish is dendeng which is smashed smoked/grilledbeef. There are different types of dendeng. One of the wellknown ones is in Rumah Makan Dendeng Batokok Muara Kalaban in Sawahlunto, about 5km from the city of Sawahlunto. They have been using a traditional method of cooking of which the recipe has been passed from one generation to another. The sliced lean beef is marinated for 5 hours in different spices, and afterwards smoked for 10 hours. Then pounded into thin slices with big black stone.
Before served, it is grilled with special home made pure coconut oil. The dish is very addictive, i can assure you one slice won't be enough. It was so flavourful with beef flavour, meat was juicy and tender, and the coconut oil was very fragrant.
The restaurant also serves other typical minangkabau dishes but this dendeng is the star of show!

Before going on this culinary trip, i wasn't really a big fan of dendeng, as in some padang restaurants the meat could be hard and chewy. However, i really enjoyed this one and it confirmed that, as long as it is done right; with the good quality ingredients, with the right recipe and cooking technique, one dish could stand out from the rest!

Smashed pan grilled plantain banana with grated cheese and banana fritter, both with grated cheese. Ideal afternoon snack for afternoon tea. This stall is located inside "Urban Kitchen" in Pacific Place Mall located in the central business district of Jakarta. Typical of street food, but served at very convenient atas food centre in a prestigious mall in the heart of Jakarta.
This is a must have food when visiting Jakarta. Nasi Campur Kenanga is a famous mixed rice/noodle consist of roast pork belly, char siu, pork siomay, ngohiong, egg, braised pig ear, and pork satay. It has different branches in Jakarta which has been there for a long time ago established by a Chinese Indonesian family in Jakarta. You can choose rice, noodle or beehoon as the best. I had my noodle. The roast pork and the pork satay were out of this world!
Ps: One thing i like when i'm in Indonesia: jeruk murni which is pure tangerine juice, freshly squeezed, and i always request for no sugar nor ice. The one in Kedai Kenanga us just perfext!
Next time i will skip the charsiu, but definitely will be back for more whenever i'm in Jakarta. I wish they opened a branch in Singapore, i'm sure it would be a hit!!! Enakkkkk!!
"A traditional Samsui dish consumed by the Samsui women in Chinatown. Due to their low income, the Samsui Ginger Chicken was only consumed once a year, during the Chinese New Year. Chicken was steamed without much seasoning after which, dipped in ginger sauce before consumption. The ginger sauce is a fragrant and tasty compliment to the chicken. Ginger and sesame oil, as believed by the Chinese, removes excess wind from the body. You may wrap the chicken in lettuce to achieve that crunch when you bite into the popular Samsui Ginger Chicken"
Nice classic dish from the Soup Restaurant (which open their latest branch at Raffles Hotel Arcade). Another version of chicken rice, tender and juicy chicken, their ginger sauce plays important addition of flavour as you bite into the lettuce, cucumber, chicken ginger sauce all together. Very good presentation.
Also i really like their sambal sweet potato leaves, very tasty, recommended!
The one of the left is Katupek Cubadak (young jackfruit curry with rice cakes), on the top right is another special snack from Padang called Sala Lauak, Padang version of fried fish cakes, mixed with turmeric and other spices. Lamak bana! .

The beef meat and cow's tounge are first cooked with spices and then cut into chunks, coated with grated coconut and then on satay sticks grilled on coconut shell charcoal, while basted with shallot and beef fat oil. They are then served with rice cakes with thick yellow gravy made of beef stock, rice flour, coconut milk, shallot, ginger, turmeric, chili, ginger, coriander, and galangal. The meat is super tender and i actually like the tounge better than the meat satay, sounds horrible but you just have to try it yourself. The seller places the satay on a plate and by the end of the meal they will count how many are left and then you pay on how many sticks you eat. Delicious!.

I was being adventurous yesterday after i found this place from burpple, as i needed to go to Mustafa, so why not trying Indian food there. A simple basic indian restaurant at a small street, walking distance from Mustafa. Had choice of rice or the indian bread, i chosed rice and immediately the waiter laid down banana leaf, the free flow rice, 2 kinds of veggies (a type of squash and cabbage, chutney and papadum. Then i chosed chicken and fried fish from so many choices of chicken, mutton, fish, crab etc.. The dal curry with green pepper and brinjal was placed in a medium sized bucket and you could get it as much as you like. It was good and satisfying, however i need to mention i was so thirsty few hours after that, too much salt? Or MSG? Maybe?
I don't normally enjoy vegetarian food but i have few exceptions including this roasted vegetable sandwich. Crispy baguette with slices of roasted zucchini, eggplant, bell pepper, perfectly charred roasted with some herbs, along with kalamata olives, feta cheese, rocket leaves, and pesto dressing. What a perfect combination of italian/mediteranean flavours! 😋
Slightly better if you ask them to warm it up first and enjoy it at the cafe instead of taking it away as the baguette tastes better when it is warm.
