That marbling, and the Striation of the meat is all you need to see, to know that this is some top tier stuff. Watch for the Onions and the brussel sprouts, because they surprise with a sweet texture that drives the greatness of this dish!
No, this one is not from the Michelin Hawker. Instead, it's a humble stall called Fatty Ox Hong Kong Chicken. Savoury, juicy, and remarkably tender, this is one of the best Hawkers joints I've been to. Skip Liao Fan, and go for what is an understated star of Smith Street.
The risotto is perfectly timed, and absorbs the hearty lobster bisque, giving some great texture on top of the crunch of fresh, properly cooked lobster. Amazing, especially that bisque!
The key thing here is that it's got a solid layer of Shogoin Turnip Pickrus, with a slight acidity that cuts through the strength of the fish eggs on this dish. Substantial shreds of crab layer the bottom, giving this dish texture, bite and a touch of seaward Flavours. Exquisite playing aside, this is a masterful play on Flavours by Chef Shinkai!
We had a lot more, but I really liked the Apricot Tart and little rectangle of Chocolate cake. Both were not too sweet, and of course that Brioche Bun was thoroughly enjoyable!
I often fall back in this as a comfort meal, with its warm runny egg and crunchy Tonkatsu that lies underneath that egg. Some truly lovely stuff!
Unfortunately, this order of Buta God Ramen got the eggs wrong. What was supposed to be runny Egg ended up as a coagulated, sticky mess.
That was a pity, because the noodles, pork and soup stock were pretty good. A weak spot in an otherwise solid entry into the ramen game at Central, but for me: Santouka any time.
400g of ribeye to see 2017 off, and welcome 2018. Absolutely solid stuff.
Case in point: This Volcano Chicken from Famous Kitchen (yes, it's really just called Famous Kitchen!)
I must say that this is one of the juiciest roast chickens I've had in recent times, and while it IS a tad too salty, I liked how it gave me a little more joy every time I chewed on the smooth meat. Supremely enjoyable!
This is grilled over almond wood, so there's a slight fragrance to it! I loved the crust too 😋 At $29.90, all meatheads can indulge in some joyful meat meals! 😋😋
