Tainan's number one night market looked bigger than it is. I managed to try this Taiwanese dish I love at the only stall selling it in its city of origin. Unfortunately it was average. The toast was good but the filling basic and wasn't hot. The pork used was also low quality. The aged stallholder was amusingly focused on her phone haha.
We tried many other things of course, but I couldn't take photos. The famous 二师兄 braised was underwhelming. We picked 七里香, tau kwa, chicken wing, duck wing and 甜不辣. I only enjoyed the 七里香, although my friends claimed everything got better with beer.
A fried chicken cutlet near the entrance was average, possibly because it was fried beforehand and grilled before serving.
Here they sell Taiwan sausage and glutinous rice sausage separately, unlike 大肠包小肠. But they're sold together, so you can say it's a variation? They were very good when accompanied by pickles and cucumber!
A friend introduced grilled corn cob for the second time in a second city (first was Bali) and again it sucked haha.
A scallion pancake fritters was a surprisingly good adaptation, turning the snack into a crispy version.
A duck 猪油拌饭 seemed interesting, but is basically glutinous rice.
Giant crabsticks were a scam. The picture made them look like crab legs and they're not cheap but they use those artificial processed crabstick lor.
Fried fermented beancurd chicken was everywhere, so I bought it. Apparently it's a Tainan creation. But it was basic. It's like a poorer cousin of fried chicken.
As always, fried noodles were extremely simple but tasty.
Meat skewers were okay, but I can get better ones in Singapore haha.
The quintessential papaya milk was decent, but might be because I asked for sweeter.
A muah chee shaved ice was surprisingly good, featuring the softest muah chee I've encountered. And a hot-cold combo always works.
1 for 40twd (S$1.80) Finally tried one so I can stop challenging myself. Had cricket, survived so one off bucket list HAHA. Lost a bet, had to try it first but nod of approval and my friends kinda liked it. Honestly it wasn't that bad cos it was fried in fact I probably wouldn't have known I was eating cricket if I didn't see it. Just had to overcome the psychological barrier. No strange explosions of stuff in my mouth. It helped that the batter was tasty 😂
Bite-sized ribs that were deboned, fried yet still juicy. Perfect snack to consume as you hunt for the next eats.
