Aside from it being a tad on the sweeter side, this was a comforting and tasty bowl of French onion soup! Can try!
While we weren’t exactly ‘blown away’ by their kouign-amman, it was still a really good tasting one! Can try!
The sashimi slices were fresh and decently thick, but it was the ingredients beneath that elevated this bowl! The rice had nice bites of crispy tiny shrimps and crunchy puffed rice with mild truffle undertones; something different from the regular flavoured rice you find at other places.
Each piece was really tasty, with some of the fish having been dry-aged, which gave it a richer flavour and more delicate texture! Do note that you might not be getting the same seven pieces you see here as they usually serve it ‘omakase’ style, so it’s dependent on the chef’s ‘mood’ that day.
The beef was tender, and glazed in a well-balanced, glossy sauce that was really flavourful! The fried garlic chips added a savoury crunch too!
Thinking of having something different for the festive season this year? Check out Rempapa’s festive offerings, with Chef Damian D’Silva’s renditions of classic British dishes but with Singapore heritage flavours that are available for dine-in and takeaway from 15-31 December 2022. I had a chance to taste these dishes beforehand and I must say they were all very delicious!
The Roast GG French Poulet with Rempapa Spices ($90, 1.3kg) is first brined in a blend of spices for 24 hours then stuffed with herbs and aromatics like pandan leaves, fresh bay leaves and lemongrass before the chicken goes into the roaster. The whole chicken was so well-marinated, tender and juicy (even the breast meat)!
Next, the Spiced Meatloaf with Sambal Mashed Potatoes ($90, 1.2kg) is made with pork and cooked with nutmeg and curry powder. The mash is mixed in with a sambal before it is piped over the meat and baked to finish. If you like your flavours heavy with a savoury touch, you will definitely enjoy this dish like I did!
To complement the mains is Rempapa’s version of Bubble & Squeak with roasted pork, brussels sprouts and onions, all cooked in a sauce of black bean, matured black vinegar, light soy, pepper and shallot oil! This was so moreish, with all the different flavours combining harmoniously! Goes super well with rice!
Finally, there is the Spotted Dick with Gula Melaka Custard ($35, 500g), a traditional steamed pudding that contains beef tallow, brandy-soaked currants, orange and lemon zest, served with creme anglaise sweetened with gula melaka. An indulgent and sweet end to the meal!
These dishes are available for takeaway (except the Bubble & Squeak), while all four festive dishes are also available as a Festive Platter ($120) for dine-in guests, which will be portioned for four pax. Orders must be placed 3 days in advance.
Our first meal in Bangkok was at Pe Aor, where I had this comforting bowl of tom yum soup with prawn, fish, squid, marinated pork and noodles (120 Baht). The soup is really shiok - I like how robust and creamy it was! You can choose your preferred type of noodles, like MAMA and rice vermicelli. We also tried some of their sides like Fried Chicken Wings (50 Baht), which were yummy too!
This was one of the makan places I was most looking forward to prior to my Bangkok trip, because I had heard so much about their 50-year-old soup! After trying their beef noodle soup yesterday, here are my thoughts.
The broth had a nice, clean beefy flavour that was comforting, but I was expecting a more robust and richer broth. The beef parts (beef slices, beef balls, beef tendon etc) were really good though - they were tender and yummy! Overall for me, I would say it still a pretty solid bowl but those expecting a rich broth might be slightly disappointed.
Here’s the Love Letter Waffle with Strawberry & Cream and Toasted White Chocolate Ice Cream from Oh My Cow!, a newly opened homegrown ice cream and dessert cafe at Marina Square. We enjoyed the eggy flavour and dense texture of the waffle, while both ice creams were good and complemented the waffle well!
We were impressed with our recent yakiniku dining experience at En Yakiniku.
They use binchotan charcoal here for the grilling and it really does make a difference in terms of taste (slightly smokier)! We tried some of their premium quality beef cuts (sourced from Miyazaki prefecture in Kyushu, Japan) like A4 wagyu ribeye & A4 wagyu striploin (both of these were so good!), beef tongue, oyster blade, US beef chuck and US prime short rib (loved this too!), as well as tasty pork cuts like Iberico pork collar and chestnut duroc belly, along with tiger prawns, tsukune chicken ball, and some of their cooked food items. The food here ain’t the cheapest, but you are definitely getting your money’s worth with the quality! This place acts as a sake bar too, with an open bar concept so do order some alcohol to pair with your grilled food!
The service standard here is awesome; you can request for help to grill the meats for you and even to de-shell prawns! The ambiance here is really cool & convivial as well, and both of these factors certainly elevated the overall dining experience even more!
Can’t go wrong with sticky date pudding as a sweet ending to the meal. Enjoyed the yogurt speculoos gelato!
A solid focaccia and butter combo - thought the addition of honey to the butter made it very appetising! Nothing to complain about!
